Swindell Dominates Second Gold Cup Prelim By Richard Day CHICO, CA (September 20) - While opening night featured a pair of kings battling for the lead, it was brother versus brother when the Skoal Outlaw Series returned to Silver Dollar Speedway for the second preliminary program at the 43rd Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions. The Swindell brothers - Sammy and Jeff - transformed Friday's races into a family feud, finishing first and second in both the Vivarin Dash and the Preliminary Feature. Sammy, the 1981 Gold Cup champion, led all 25 laps for his second Preliminary Feature victory of the year. By also qualifying second-quick and finishing fourth in the Second Quaker State Heat Race, Swindell tied two-time defending champion Andy Hillenburg for the lead in the preliminary point standings. Sammy received the pole position in Saturday's $20,000-to-win championship feature because he won Friday's race. Although burst into the lead from the pole as the green flag fell in the preliminary feature, it was a long and winding road as lapped traffic, frequent cautions, and a couple of close calls detoured his trip to victory lane. After First Quaker State Heat Race winner Jonathan Allard spun to a stop late in the second lap, Second Quaker State Heat Race winner Randy Hannagan and "B" Feature winner Lance Blevins crashed into the infield retaining tires the next time around. Although Hannagan returned to the race with a damaged front end, Blevins' front-straightaway flip destroyed the #21 Citgo J&J. Swindell raced away from the field as the green flag replaced the red and opened a full-straightaway advantage within three laps. He was 10 car-lengths ahead of EcoWater Quick-Time Award winner Paul McMahan and brother Jeff when he entered lapped traffic during the eighth lap. Although fourth-corner spins by Dale Cross and Tim Kaeding tightened the field the next time around, Swindell drove his #1 Channellock Gambler away from the field again as the race resumed. He was 10 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when he caught the backmarkers again during lap 14. Sammy slowed in dense lapped traffic four laps later as the battle for second place between McMahan and Jeff raged. At the same time, former World of Outlaws Rookies of the Year Stevie Smith and Jim Carr jockeyed for fourth place right behind them. Swindell survived a couple of near-crashes during the final five laps. He executed a daring move between a pair of backmarkers heading into the fourth corner late in the 20th lap, then almost collided with Hannagan on the front stretch two laps later. Jeff drove the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim past McMahan in heavy lapped traffic with three laps remaining, but was eight car- lengths behind when Sammy took the checkered flag. "It was tight in lapped traffic a couple of times, but we got through it OK," Swindell told the capacity crowd from victory lane. Smith steered the #71M EcoWater Systems Maxim high into turn one to pass Carr for fourth place early in the final lap. Dave Blaney finished sixth, ahead of Johnny Herrera, Steve Kent, Ray Rust and 15th-starting Jamie Cobbe. Blaney, the defending Skoal Outlaw Series champion, flipped in turn four as the green flag fell in the Fourth Quaker State Heat Race. After crew chief Kenny Woodruff somehow got the mangled #10 Vivarin J&J race-ready, "The Buckeye Bullet" finished third in the "B" Feature, then passed three sprinters in the evening's main event. Blaney wasn't the only one of the eight fastest qualifiers to have trouble in the heat races. Blevins, a World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year candidate, qualified fifth-quick but missed an opportunity to race in the Vivarin Dash when he finished sixth in the First Quaker State Heat Race. Marc Zieske, the seventh- fastest qualifier, suffered a similar fate when he ran sixth in the Third Quaker State Heat Race. Their problems allowed Smith, Kent and Chad Riolo to compete in the Vivarin Dash.
