After Florida start, Stewart ready for West Coast action
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (February 17, 2003) - After three weeks of racing action in Florida, Tulsa's Shane Stewart and the Scott Chilcutt-owned #4m Sprint Car team are making the cross country trek to California to vie for victory honors as the World of Outlaws season gets under way.
Shane kicked off the 2003 season in strong form aboard the Hoosier-shod mIn Motorsports Management/Pro Lube Center/Cox Communications Snyder-powered MCI, notching a pair of top ten finishes in East Bay Raceway Park's "King of the 360's" preliminary action, then charging from tenth to finish a close second in the $10,000-to-win "King of the 360's" finale. Shane was reeling in eventual winner Sport Allen as the duo sliced through lapped traffic in the closing laps on the quick Tampa oval but ran out of laps to make the winning move.
The #4m Brodix/Sander Engineering/Penske Shocks team then competed in the seven All-Star events at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, FL, and East Bay Raceway, with Volusia's finale being cancelled due to rain. As crew team Rob Hart and Cathy Barrows tested and tuned the 410 Wesmar-powered MCI, Shane showed flashes of impending success, recording three top ten finishes along the way.
Shane's top finish in Florida's All-Star competition was a strong fourth place showing in the Volusia Speedway Park opener. Shane also scored a pair of top ten finishes in East Bay All-Star action, including a strong eighth place run in the Florida Speedweeks finale after a tangle in lapped traffic while running fourth the night before knocked the team from sixth in points and climbing status. Shane also made several strong runs from the tail of the field, turning in impressive passing performances aboard the B&B Oval Products/HRP Wings/Banshee Graphics/Schoenfeld Headers sprinter.
Shane and crew will now pick up the early portion of the 2003 World of Outlaws tour, beginning with this Friday night's, February 21, WoO season opener at King's Speedway in Hanford, CA. From there, Shane will travel with the Outlaws to Perris (CA) Auto Speedway before spending the next two weekends competing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Hollywood Hills Speedway near Albuquerque, NM.
Shane and the #4m team will compete in more than 100 events with a variety of different series throughout the country this season, including approximately half of the races on the WoO schedule. In addition to the WoO events, the Wesmar 410's will also be in place in the Eagle and MCI chassis for All-Star and NCRA competition, while the Snyder 360's will be in place for 25-30 ASCS events, including Knoxville's 360 Nationals and the competitive ASCS Speedweek.
