World of Outlaws Return to Las Vegas in 2009
Concord, NC-- November 25, 2008-- The World of Outlaws are returning to The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada on Thursday, February 26, 2009 for a full night of racing, to help kick-off the track's annual NASCAR weekend.
The World of Outlaws first competed at the half-mile in 1996 and most recently raced there in 2006. There have been 10 drivers pick up A-Feature wins at the track during that span.
Donny Schatz, the three-time and defending World of Outlaws champion, won in the series last visit to the track in 2006, to cap off his first championship season. He has five A-Feature wins in his career at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Dating back to 1998, the North Dakota native has racked up 25 Top-10 finishes at the half-mile, with 14 of those being in the Top-Five.
"I'm really excited about having the chance to get back to Las Vegas," said Schatz. "We've been pretty fortunate there in the past. It will always hold a special place for me. From winning the last World of Outlaws race of the millennium there in 1999, to winning the last race in 2006 and clinching my first Outlaws championship. It's just one of those places where I've had some success."
The 2009 season will mark the second year for Schatz behind the wheel for Tony Stewart Racing, owned by the two-time NASCAR champion. Schatz won 18 times this past season en route to the World of Outlaws title and led the series with 58 Top-10 finishes. He has finished first or second in three of his last four starts at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and will look to add to his five career wins at the half-mile on February 26.
"I'm looking forward to taking our Armor All car there next year," he shared. "Las Vegas is a big fast track and the Tony Stewart Racing team has plenty of Chevy horsepower and that is always a key there. You have to get your car working well since the track conditions are always changing. We've been able to win there when it was rough and when the track has been slick to the cushion. My crew does a great job, and I know they'll be excited about heading back out to race in Las Vegas again too."
Joey Saldana, who drives for NASCAR star Kasey Kahne, has 22 Top-10 finishes in his career at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, with 10 of those being Top-Five performances. He finished fourth in his last race at the track in 2006. He has finished ninth or better in his last four races at the half-mile, as he seeks his first win at the desert track. The second generation driver from Brownsburg, Indiana has three runner-up finishes at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in his career as he looks for his first win at the track.
"For our team it's really important to be there, especially with it being during the NASCAR week," said Saldana. "For Kasey, it's a great time. He'll be able to come out to the track and watch us and then race himself in the NASCAR race. He doesn't get to do that, all that many times, so that will be great for him and our sponsors."
Steve Kinser, the 20-time World of Outlaws champion and the winningest driver in series history with 550 A-Feature triumphs, has won three A-Feature events at the track in his career, along with three preliminary features. The native of Bloomington, Indiana has 31 career Top-10 finishes at the track in A-Feature events and preliminary features.
Jac Haudenschild, who won five times in 2008 with the World of Outlaws was victorious at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2000. He has 21 career Top-10 finishes at the track in A-Feature events and preliminary features. He finished fifth in points this past season in his first year driving for the Carnahan Motorsports team.
Other drivers that have won in World of Outlaws competition at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway include: two-time series champion Mark Kinser who has three A-Feature wins and five preliminary feature victories, 2001series titlist Danny Lasoski, who has three A-Feature and three preliminary feature wins, three-time series champion Sammy Swindell, who has two A-Feature and two preliminary feature wins, Tim Shaffer who has two A-Feature and one preliminary feature win.
