McMahan Leaves Beef Packers for Mopar; Hannagan to Drive #83 TERRE HAUTE, IN (May 8) - Silly season has hit the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series for the second time this year. Gary Stanton, who hired Australian Garry Brazier after 1996 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year Joey Saldana left the #75 Mopar team earlier this season, has hired Paul McMahan as his new driver. Dennis Roth, whose #83 Beef Packers Stealth was driven by McMahan in the first 14 events this year, has chosen 1995 Rookie of the Year Randy Hannagan to be his driver. Ironically, Hannagan opened the 1996 season with Stanton, who replaced him with Saldana, the driver of Roth's #83 early last season. "I was under the impression the Beef Parkers were going home," McMahan said, "so I started looking other places. Gary and I hooked up, and I'm excited about going racing with him. "Being the World of Outlaws' Rookie of the Year is really important to me, so I wanted to make sure I had a ride for the whole year." McMahan ranks 10th in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series standings, and leads Donny Schatz by 59 points in the Rookie of the Year race. Roth hired Hannagan and 1992 World of Outlaws Crew Chief of the Year Brian Sperry, late of Blevins Motorsports' Citgo team, with hopes of improving his 11th-place standing in owner points. "We're glad to be able to hire such good people at this point in the season," Roth said. "We're going to get back out there and see if we can make some noise." Sperry will join current Beef Packers crew chief Mark Ellis Friday as the World of Outlaws heads into a three-day weekend of racing at the Terre Haute Action Track, Tri-City Speedway and Tri-State Speedway. McMahan is also expected to start his tenure in the #75 Mopar Stealth Friday at Terre Haute. Hannagan and Sperry say they will share equal responsibility with Ellis when it comes to decisions concerning the Wesmar- powered #83 Stealth. WoO
