PORT ROYAL, PA (September 29) -- The O'Reilly World of Outlaws Series' fire-breathing, mudslinging sprint car racing teams will face their toughest local competition of the season this week when they race against the "Pennsylvania Posse."
Sprint car racing's premier series will run a $51,600 event at Port Royal Speedway Thursday, then sanction the 41st Annual Williams Grove National Open at Williams Grove Speedway Friday and Saturday.
Steve Kinser increased his advantage in the standings to a season-high 74 points Saturday when he dominated the Talladega Short Track event. The defending and 17-time series champion paced the qualifying session, won the First Dash Race and led all 40 laps from the pole in the "A" Feature. The $10,000 victory was Kinser's 23rd of the O'Reilly World of Outlaws Series' Silver Anniversary Season. Since exchanging the points lead with 2001 series champion Danny Lasoski in early September, "The King of the Outlaws" has won four of the last five main events.
Kinser is winless in five "A" Features at Port Royal's semi-banked, ½-mile oval, but has won 23 main events at legendary Williams Grove Speedway. Lasoski won a Preliminary Feature at "The Grove" on July 25, 2002, but suffered multiple injuries in a crash one night later.
Only six of Kinser's 23 main event victories in 2003 have come at tracks a half-mile or larger in length, and three of those were at Eldora Speedway. "The Dude" has recorded eight of his 10 "A" Feature victories on half-mile ovals like Port Royal and Williams Grove this year.
Sixteen drivers, including other O'Reilly World of Outlaws Series regulars Joey Saldana, Daryn Pittman, Donny Schatz, Brian Paulus, Paul McMahan, Tim Shaffer and Jason Meyers, have won main events this season. Schatz won the Second Preliminary Feature and the "A" Feature at the Second Annual Cleveland Brothers Summer Nationals at Williams Grove Speedway in late July.
Defending and three-time Williams Grove National Open champion Lance Dewease will lead the "Pennsylvania Posse" against the Outlaws. Dewease raced past 12 cars to claim the $30,000 first prize a year ago.
Don Kreitz, Jr., who won the Preliminary Feature on opening night of the Summer Nationals at Williams Grove July 24th, won a main event at Port Royal Speedway on May 28, 1986. He has won five O'Reilly World of Outlaws Series "A" Features at Williams Grove Speedway, including the 1993 National Open.
Three other "Pennsylvania Posse" front-runners have beaten the Outlaws at Williams Grove Speedway: Greg Hodnett, Fred Rahmer and Keith Kauffman.
