Pittman & Schatz Compete in World Series Finale in Australia
Daryn Pittman and two-time reigning Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz are competing in the final two rounds of the Wanless World Series Sprintcar season this weekend at Titan Garages Brisbane International Speedway at Archerfield in Australia.
The two-night program will culminate with a special 50-lap, $20,000 to-win event on Saturday night.
On Friday night in the 25-lap preliminary feature, Pittman finished fifth, while Schatz was 11th, on a track that was very hard to pass on, in an event won by Trevor Green.
Pittman, the only American driver to win a World Series championship (2002/2003), began the night by turning the fastest lap in time trials, of the 36 cars that took to the track, with Schatz eighth and current World Series point leader and multi-time World of Outlaws A-Feature winner Brooke Tatnell, ninth. Each driver took part in three rounds of time trials, with their best lap of the three being recorded.
In preliminary action, Pittman finished fifth in the fifth heat race, after having trouble in the first heat race. By way of World Series rules, each competitor takes part in two heat races over the course of the race program. Pittman, who won six times with the World of Outlaws in 2007, would line up sixth for the preliminary feature.
Schatz, who won 19 times en route to his second consecutive World of Outlaws championship in 2007, finished third in the eighth heat race on Friday night, after having trouble in the fourth heat. He lined up 10th for the preliminary feature.
Tatnell finished seventh in the preliminary feature and holds a 13-point lead heading into action on Saturday night, as he chases down his sixth World Series title.
Pittman and Schatz will take part in the special 50-lap finale for the World Series Sprintcars on Saturday night in Brisbane, with the winner taking home $20,000. Pittman won at Brisbane on December 26, while Schatz has reached Victory Lane four times in just five starts at Parramatta City Raceway over the last three weeks, including a $50,000 triumph last weekend.
Also in action on Saturday night in Australia will be 20-time Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Steve Kinser along with reigning Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Kerry Madsen, who will both be competing at Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway, in preparation for a three-night event next week that will feature several other World of Outlaws drivers.
The 30th anniversary Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series season begins on February 8, 2008 with the 37th Annual Florida DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park.
