Smith Wins Second Duel in the Dakotas Prelim By Richard Day WEST FARGO, ND (July 9) - When Stevie Smith won a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature at Red River Valley Speedway two years ago, he was actively searching for a sponsor. He said the $10,000 victory kept him from having to return home to Pennsylvania. Since Smith acquired sponsorship from Ingersoll-Rand in late 1997, his career has flourished and more sponsorship has come his way as a result. Smith was proud to put together a flag-to-flag victory in the Duel in the Dakotas' Second Preliminary Feature at Red River Valley Speedway Friday with representatives from Bobcat in attendance. "We're glad to win one for the Bobcat people who are here tonight," Stevie said. "They came on board this year along with Ingersoll-Rand and Club Car." Smith, the 19th-fastest qualifier in the 33-car field, won the Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race and started the Channellock Dash on the front row with fellow New Oxford, PA, native Kevin Gobrecht. Smith earned the right to start the feature on the pole by winning the five- lap race. Gobrecht drove the #93 Amoco J&J around Smith as the green flag fell in the evening's main event, only to have Kasey Kahne, Lance Blevins and "B" Feature winner Daryn Pittman crash in the second corner. The #47 Casey's General Stores received extensive damage, keeping Pittman from restarting the race. Smith burst into the lead when the green flag replaced the yellow. Shane Stewart's second-corner spin brought out the caution flag early in the second lap. A broken torsion stop on the #1 Channellock Stealth forced defending Duel in the Dakotas champion Sammy Swindell to stop on the back straightaway and surrender fourth place as the race resumed. Smith was 1.7 seconds ahead of Gobrecht when he entered lapped traffic seven laps into the race. Danny Lasoski, who passed Tyler Walker for fourth place during the third-lap restart, took third from First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Jeff Swindell with an inside move in turn one early in the ninth lap. "The Dude" steered the #83 Beef Packers Eagle deep in turn three to pass Gobrecht for the runner-up spot 2 1/2 laps later. Steve Kinser, winner of seven Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Features at Red River Valley Speedway, passed Walker for fifth place low in between the third and fourth corners midway through the race. He drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past Jeff Swindell four laps later, and took third from Jac Haudenschild with two laps remaining. Lasoski chased Smith through lapped traffic and closed to within .8 seconds of him with five laps remaining. He raced wheel-to-wheel with Stevie through the third and fourth corners, but couldn't surge ahead. "The Dude" slowed behind a pack of backmarkers the next time around, allowing Smith to pull away slightly. Stevie was .3 seconds ahead when he took the checkered flag. Smith's second Preliminary Feature victory of the season pushed him into fifth place in the point standings, four points ahead of Johnny Herrera. "My hat's off to the World of Outlaws and Don Mack for giving us a great race track," Stevie said. "It had a top groove, a bottom groove, and you could even run through the middle. If we can have a track this good again tomorrow night, it might be the best race of the year. "My car felt pretty good on the top at the start, but at the end I was just hanging on. I knew there were some good cars coming." "The King of the Outlaws" finished in third place, ahead of Haudenschild, Gobrecht, Jeff Swindell, Walker, Herrera, Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Andy Hillenburg and 16th-starting Mark Kinser. Hillenburg received his first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the year for pacing the qualifying session with a 16.299-second, 110.436- m.p.h., lap around the high-banked, 1/2-mile oval. TNN Motorsports will televise Saturday's Duel in the Dakotas feature racing program from Red River Valley Speedway live between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. (EDT). WoO
