FORT WORTH-DALLAS (September 12, 2001) - Donny Schatz is enjoying the best season of his Pennzoil World of Outlaws sprint car career. He wants to add a winner's trophy from the O'Reilly Texas Showdown at the Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track Friday and Saturday, September 14-15 to his collection.
Schatz has posted six series triumphs aboard the Parker Stores/Featherlite Coaches J&J to go along with four preliminary race victories. The performances have pushed Schatz into fourth place in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws standings.
"The Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track is one of the finest facilities we race at, but I wish I could win something there, a heat race, Dash or preferably a feature race," said Schatz. "I just haven't been able to figure the track out. We ran the best we ever have there this spring and finished eighth and tenth.
"Obviously our program is running at a lot higher level than we were in March, so I'm optimistic that we'll have a good chance. I'm also looking forward to doing well again in front of the TNN (The National Network) cameras. The last shot they had of me was getting into an ambulance at Knoxville. I want people to have something different to remember me by."
Schatz will have to battle two drivers embroiled in the closed Pennzoil World of Outlaws point race in history. Mark Kinser currently leads Danny Lasoski by 23 markers entering the weekend. Steve Kinser is third in the standings followed by Schatz and Craig Dollansky.
The previously announced schedule for the O'Reilly Texas Showdown will be followed. Spectator gates open nightly at 5:00 p.m. with qualifying at 6:00 p.m. and O'Reilly heat races at 7:00 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the ticket office, by calling (817) 215-8500, online at www.texasmotorspeedway.com or at Ticketmaster locations.
