Saldana, Roth to Join World of Outlaws in 1996 By Richard Day FRESNO, CA (November 2) - Joey Saldana, who stunned the World of Outlaws by winning the "A" Feature at I-96 Speedway last season, has been hired by Dennis Roth to race with the series on a full-time basis in 1996. "This has been an ambition of mine for several years," Roth said Thursday. "We started racing in California three years ago, but now we want to step it up. When I heard about Joey's situation, I gave him a call. We've also hired Glenn Stewart as our crew chief, so we're just about ready to go racing." Saldana, whose father, Joe, won the Knoxville Nationals in 1970, drove the #77W Wendt Trucking Stealth for Art Wendt last season. Roth heard that Wendt was dissolving his racing team in September and offered Saldana the chance to race for the Skoal Outlaw Series' 1996 Rookie of the Year Award. "This is a great opportunity for me," Saldana said. "I just hope we can do well. I might not have ever gotten a chance to do it if he hadn't called. "Mr. Roth has the finances to do it; I just hope I'm ready. I know it's a demanding series. This will be my first time going out on the road." Saldana surprised everyone when he won the World of Outlaws' "A" Feature at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, MI, on July 24th. He raced to victory from the third row in the Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race, then earned the right to start the main event on the pole by winning the Vivarin Dash. Saldana burst into the lead as the green flag fell and led all 30 laps to claim the first Skoal Outlaw Series "A" Feature victory of his career. "I had some races at that track before, but to win against those guys was really special," Saldana said. "Winning that race got me the exposure I needed to get people looking at me. It's really hard to win a World of Outlaws feature with Steve (Kinser) and Sammy (Swindell) out there. "Everything just went well that night. We won the dash, and that helped us out a lot." Beef Packers, Inc., a company owned by Roth, will sponsor the team. The cars will be Stealth chassis powered by Wesmar Engines. WoO
