'BUCKEYE BULLET' TAKES ELDORA OPENER By Richard Day ROSSBURG, OH (April 14) - Dave Blaney, winner of three of the World of Outlaws' last six "A" Features at Eldora Speedway, picked up where he left off when the Skoal Outlaw Series opened a double-feature event at "the world's fastest half-mile" Friday night. "The Buckeye Bullet" drove the #10 Vivarin J&J around polesitter Mark Kinser late in the opening lap and led all 20 laps to claim the $4,000 first prize in the Preliminary Feature. "The race track was in good shape tonight," Blaney said in victory lane. "It was nice for qualifying. It got a little slick in the feature which made it easier to pass. "I'd like to thank Vivarin, Casey and Beverly Luna and Kenny Woodruff for giving me such a good car to drive." Blaney, the runner-up in the Fourth Snap-on Tools Heat Race, also finished second in the Vivarin Dash. He raced past Ecowater Fast-Time Award winner Charlie Fisher as they took the white flag in the five-lap race to earn the outside pole position the Preliminary Feature. Kinser, the Vivarin Dash winner, inched ahead of Blaney as the green flag fell in the evening's main event. "The Buckeye Bullet" caught him on the front straightaway, however, and they raced wheel-to-wheel around the high-banked oval. Blaney took the lead by passing Kinser high in the fourth corner. World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year candidate Randy Hannagan spun to a stop at the start/finish line just seconds after the leaders completed the first lap. Jac Haudenschild relegated Kinser to third place as the green flag replaced the yellow. Blaney opened a six-car-length advantage within three laps and caught the backmarkers five laps into the race. Fourth Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Greg Hodnett brought out the caution flag the next time around, stopping the #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim on the front straightaway with a blown engine. With Scott Kalitta restarting between him and "The Wild Child," Blaney ran away from the field again when the race resumed. He opened an eight-car-length advantage during lap seven. Andy Hillenburg drove his #2 STP J&J past four cars during the first six laps, then took fifth place from Stevie Smith early in the eighth lap. "The Buckeye Bullet" was a half-straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic again midway through the race. Hillenburg was challenging Jeff Swindell for fourth place when Kinser regained second place with an inside-out move past Haudenschild in turn three with six laps remaining. Hillenburg took the high road around Swindell the next time around. Blaney maintained a half-straightaway lead and lapped 13 of the 24 cars in the field as Kinser and "The Wild Child" battled for the runner-up spot throughout the final five laps. The victory pushed Blaney to within six points of Haudenschild in their battle for the lead in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings. Hillenburg held off Swindell to claim the fourth and final automatic starting position in Saturday's Snap-on Tools Dash. Rounding out the top 10 in the Preliminary Feature were Smith, Danny Lasoski, Joey Saldana, 12th- starting Jeff Shepard and Rickey Hood. Fisher was almost a half-second off the one-lap record he set at Eldora on August 13, 1993, but he was the fastest qualifier in the 34-car field. Former World of Outlaws champion Bobby Davis, Jr., Hillenburg, Kenny Jacobs and Hodnett won the Snap-on Tools Heat Races. Keith Kauffman edged Johnny Herrera in the "B" Feature.
