KINSER EXECUTES LATE PASS TO WIN ROLLING WHEELS EVENT By Richard Day ELBRIDGE, NY (June 6) - "I'm getting too old for this," Steve Kinser said Tuesday after winning the World of Outlaws' "A" Feature at Rolling Wheels Raceway. "I may only do this another five or six years." This isn't good news for the competitors on the World of Outlaws' tour, especially since Steve has won four "A" Features since returning to the Skoal Outlaw Series 12 events ago. Only Mark Kinser - with eight - has won more, and he's raced in all 24 events the World of Outlaws has run this year. Kinser, the second-fastest qualifier in the 35-car field, finished third in both the Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race and the Vivarin Dash. He started the 25-lap "A" Feature on the second row behind polesitter Todd Shaffer. Mark started outside the front row and took the high road past Shaffer into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event. Steve passed fast- qualifier Jeff Swindell for third place deep in the second corner early in the third lap. Seconds later, "B" Feature winner Brian Paulus took his #28 sprinter for a spin in turn one, starting a string of four cautions before the green flag flew again. A mechanical malfunction forced Lance Yonge to stop his #17 in turn two on the ensuing restart. The next restart was marred by a collision involving Jac Haudenschild and Stevie Smith that sent the #22 Pennzoil Maxim flipping down the front straightaway. Billy Pauch brought out the yellow flag a fourth time when he slid out of the low groove, hit the cushion and flipped over the bank in the first corner. The final 23 laps were run under the green flag. Mark had the #5M Wirtgen Maxim a half-straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers when Steve threaded his #11 Quaker State Maxim between Shaffer and the inside guard rail in the second corner to take over the runner-up spot five laps into the race. Steve was battling to maintain second place when Mark caught the backmarkers early in the ninth lap. As Mark slowed behind Paulus and George Koerber, Steve and Shaffer closed to within 15 car-lengths of the lead. Steve closed in even closer as Mark had trouble entering turn four late in lap 15. Two laps later, Steve passed Mark for the lead with a low move into the second corner. He opened a 10-car-length advantage within a lap. Mark closed to within three car-lengths of the lead in heavy lapped traffic as Steve entered turn four late in the 19th lap. Dave Blaney, winner of the first two stops on the World of Outlaws' annual spring tour of New York, passed Swindell for fourth place with six laps remaining and started challenging Shaffer the next time around. "The Buckeye Bullet" out-dragged Shaffer down the front straightaway to take over in third place with two laps remaining. Mark caught Steve as the leaders took the white flag, but lost ground when he took the low line into the first corner. Steve ran the cushion throughout the final lap and was six car-lengths ahead when he took the checkered flag. Mark's fourth second-place finish of the year, coupled with Haudenschild receiving credit for 21st place, pushed him to within 21 points of the lead in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings. "I'm really proud of the guys," Steve said, referring to his crew. "We put this team together quickly. I'm glad to be racing on dirt again." Blaney held off Shaffer to finish in third place. Rounding out the top 10 in the "A" Feature were Swindell, "B" Feature runner-up Lance Blevins, Joe Gaerte and Snap-on Tools Heat Race winners Andy Hillenburg, Craig Keel and Aaron Berryhill. Swindell received his second Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year for circling Rolling Wheels' semi-banked, 5/8-mile oval in 17.880 seconds, an average speed of 125.839 m.p.h. Hillenburg earned the Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award for racing past six cars from his seventh-row starting position.
