Stenhouse Jr. finds it to be a rough ride with the Outlaws!
(April 3rd 2005, Olive Branch, MS) Well it was a bit of a rough ride for the young fast Phnom from Olive Branch, MS this weekend as the SBS Motorsports team hit the trail with the World of Outlaws. Friday night saw the team pull into the Batesville Speedway, the final team to arrive and register. Ricky was last to qualify and some brake issues left him dead last on a 25 car field. The team had thought they found the problem before the heat when the rear brakes began giving SJr fits.
During the 30 lap "A" main once again bad luck crept into the picture. Heading into the third lap the right front brake locked up and around the 40R Fast Effects Removable Decals/Kross Town Cleaners/Lunati Cranks/LoMax/Musrat Designs/Sander Engineering/J&J Chassis/Dynotech Racing engines went. The youngster was forced to just get some seat time and nurse the car home with the faulty brakes finishing 23rd.
Saturday saw the SBS team stop at the shop of Joey Montgomery to make repairs and prepare the 40R Fast Effects Removable decals/J&J chassis/Dynotech racing engines for battle. Ricky has visited I-55 before last year where he was fast but a terrible wreck in the heat left him watching the rest of the night from the hauler. The car was fast again with the young Phnom qualifying 10th just 4 tenths off of quick timer King of the Outlaws, and series defending champion Steve Kinser.
Ricky lined up 4th for his heat race but the team chose to run a bit of a harder compound for the right rear and the youngster found himself falling back but managing to hang on to 7th. Next up for the SBS Motorsports team, "B" main where the 40R Fast Effects machine would start on the pole. Joey Saldana would get the jump on the start but the youngster held onto 2nd until the closing laps when current World of Outlaw rookie of the year points leader Shane Stewart would get by relegating SJr to 3rd but solid in the "A" main.
Starting 13th the youngster was off to a solid start when on the first lap he was tagged in the rear in 3-4 and spun. Damage was significant enough to leave the Olive Branch high school junior forced to gaining more seat time and finishing 25th. All in all for the youngster not a bad showing considering there was a field of 59 cars at I-55 and this is the 8th time in a 410 for SJr.
"Well they knew we were here." said Rick Stenhouse, Sr. "We showed em we have the powerplant that we can run with these guys. It is tough to come in here with these guys that have run 100's of races and have the notes from previous races and know which gambles to take. I think we gambled on too hard of a tire at I-55. The kid is fast and as the year goes on and we get more of these shows behind us top tens will come our way."
"With each show he gains more valuable seat time with these big motors and lighter cars." he continued. "As he gets more feel he can tell me what we need in the car and we can take some gambles on tire compounds. All in all not a bad weekend we qualified well and made the "A" both nights. In this deal with these guys you take the small successes and build em into the larger ones."
