Kinser Dominates Second Red River Valley Prelim By Richard Day WEST FARGO, ND (July 10) - Less than a week after Major League Baseball's All-Star Game, Steve Kinser assembled his own all-star team for the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' Inaugural Duel in the Dakotas at Red River Valley Speedway. With Guy Forbrook joining Scott Gerken and Jimmy McBee preparing the #11 Quaker State Maxim, "The King of the Outlaws" dominated both Preliminary Features. He led all 30 laps Friday when TNN: The Nashville Network televised the action live. "The Quaker State car was actually running pretty well a couple of races before Guy started working with us," Steve said, "but there's no doubt he has the chassis setup down. I couldn't see letting someone that talented just sit around. "I felt good on the top in one and two and on the bottom in three and four. We were pretty good on the top in three and four, too. After the checkered fell, I ran it down in one and two and it felt good there, too. I don't know what else you could ask for. The car ran great everywhere. I've been having a lot of fun here the last two weeks. It's good to be running this fast." Kinser has to be feeling good after taking the points lead Tuesday and opening a 24-point lead on defending series champion Sammy Swindell with successive Preliminary Feature victories. Kinser, the sixth-fastest qualifier in the 39-car field, won the Channellock Dash for the right to start the evening's main event on the pole. Mark Kinser, who started outside the second row, took the high line into the lead within seconds after the green flag fell in the feature, only to have Danny Smith spin in the first corner and collect Third Racing Champions Heat Race winner Craig Dollansky, Terry McCarl and Shane Carson before the leaders finished the opening lap. Steve's all-star crew made several key adjustments on the #11 during the red period which allowed him to control the race. "We got lucky there," Forbrook admitted. "Mark showed us what was going on. We changed some things under the red and he (Steve) did the rest. He definitely did his job tonight." Kinser said, "I knew there was a chance I was going to get buzzed around the top on the start, and I was close to going up there myself. But I thought we had a pretty good car no matter where we had to run. The Quaker State car was rocket-ship fast. When they're like that, they're just a pleasure to drive." Mark got by Stevie Smith as the race resumed and steered the #5M Wirtgen Maxim into the low groove between turns three and four to pass Tyler Walker for second place late in the first lap. Andy Hillenburg used high and low moves to pass Walker and Danny Lasoski to take third place during laps three and four. "The King of the Outlaws" was a full straightaway ahead of his cousin when he entered lapped traffic five laps into the race. Mark narrowed the gap to a half-straightaway in dense traffic six laps later, however. Kinser made his way through the backmarkers by the midpoint of the race and returned to his full-straightaway comfort zone. Smith drove his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit to the lowest point between the third and fourth corners with 1 1/4 laps remaining to pass both Hillenburg and Mark Kinser for second. Hillenburg passed Mark with a similar move to claim third place as they headed for the checkered flag. "The King of the Outlaws" was half a lap ahead of Smith when he took the checkered flag in his third Preliminary Feature victory of the season. "We always enjoy coming here," said Steve, a seven-time "A" Feature winner at Red River Valley Speedway. "I'd like to come back and make it three in a row tomorrow." Dale Blaney finished fifth, ahead of Swindell, Walker, 19th- starting Donny Schatz, Lasoski and Brooke Tatnell. Mark received his 10th Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season for pacing the qualifying session with a 15.774-second lap around the high-banked, 1/2-mile oval. Jac Haudenschild's 12-race streak of consecutive top-five finishes ended after the #22 Pennzoil Maxim suffered a broken rear axle and hit the retaining wall in hot laps. Haudenschild qualified 14th-quick, but was unable to run the Second Racing Champions Heat Race when the fuel pump malfunctioned in his backup car. He won the "B" Feature and finished 12th in the evening's main event.
