'King' Increases Lead With Red River Victory By Richard Day WEST FARGO, ND (July 9) - Steve Kinser knows exactly what to do after taking the lead in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series point standings ... win. "The King of the Outlaws" did just that when the series opened the Inaugural Duel in the Dakotas Thursday at Red River Valley Speedway. Kinser, winner of 14 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series championships, moved into first place Tuesday at Huset's Speedway then led all 20 laps in Thursday's Preliminary Feature. Kinser, the third-fastest qualifier in the 41-car field, earned the right to start the evening's main event outside the second row by following Sammy Swindell, Jac Haudenschild and Johnny Herrera across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. Swindell executed a daring, fourth-corner pass of Haudenschild as they headed for the checkered flag to win the five-lap race. Swindell, the defending Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion, started on the pole and burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the Preliminary Feature. Kinser got off to an even faster start. He passed Herrera and Haudenschild quickly, then steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the high groove between the third and fourth corners to pass Sammy for the lead late in the opening lap. Daryn Pittman took the #21 Up Front Phone Cards J&J for a spin in turn two within seconds after the leaders completed the second lap. Kinser, who also won the Preliminary Feature at Red River Valley Speedway last July 11th, entered lapped traffic with a 3.1-second advantage during lap six. Mark Kinser, the leader in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series standings before Tuesday, steered the #5M Wirtgen Maxim to the lowest point between the first and second corners to pass Haudenschild for third the next time around. "The King of the Outlaws" was racing away from the field midway through the race when a mechanical malfunction caused Randy Butler to stop in turn one. Although the caution caused Kinser to lose his comfortable advantage, he was 3.4 seconds ahead of Sammy when he caught the backmarkers again during the 13th lap. Swindell, who has won four Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series main events at Red River Valley, cut Kinser's lead in half in dense lapped traffic with five laps remaining. Two laps later, Sammy's #1 Channellock Stealth was only .51 seconds behind Steve. Kinser increased his advantage slightly when he found an opening in lapped traffic with two laps remaining, and was .71 seconds ahead of Swindell when he took the checkered flag. The $4,500 victory, Kinser's second in a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Preliminary Feature this season, increased his advantage to 19 points over Swindell. Mark Kinser finished in third place, ahead of Haudenschild, Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Danny Lasoski, Andy Hillenburg, Herrera, First Racing Champions Heat Race winner Stevie Smith, Greg Hodnett and Donny Schatz. Lasoski received his fourth Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season after pacing the qualifying session with a 16.100-second, 111.801-m.p.h. lap around the high-banked, 1/2-mile oval. Schatz, who lives in Minot, ND, raced regularly at Red River Valley Speedway before earning the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Rookie of the Year award last season. After qualifying 20th-quick, Schatz put his experience at the track to good use, winning the Fourth Racing Champions Heat Race and passing 10 sprinters in the Preliminary Feature. Schatz is driving his commemorative 100 Years of Trucking #15 Blue Beacon Gambler during the Duel in the Dakotas.
