'King' Wins Red River Valley Prelim With Last-Lap Pass By Richard Day WEST FARGO, ND (July 11) - Steve Kinser executed a daring last-lap pass of Stevie Smith to win the Preliminary Feature Friday when the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series opened a double- feature event at Red River Valley Speedway. "The King of the Outlaws," winner of seven World of Outlaws "A" Features at West Fargo's high-banked, 1/2-mile oval, chased Smith for 19 1/2 laps before catching him on the back straightaway late in the final lap. He steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim around Smith in the fourth corner and beat him under the checkered flag by one-half car-length for his first Preliminary Feature victory of the year. "We don't have to qualify or run a heat race tomorrow (Saturday), and we get to start up front in the (Vivarin) Dash," Kinser said. "Any time you start up front with these guys, it's a good thing." The $4,500 victory pushed Kinser into second place in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series driver point standings. He entered Saturday's feature program at Red River Valley four points ahead of Dave Blaney. Jac Haudenschild got the $75,000 event off to a fast start by slicing .021 seconds off the single-lap record Smith set on July 9, 1995. The 15.691-second qualifying run earned "The Wild Child" his 13th Channellock Fast-Time Award of the season. Haudenschild picked the #4 inversion pill, putting Kinser and Smith on the front row in the Vivarin Dash. Steve and Stevie earned the right to start the Preliminary Feature on the front row by finishing 1-2, respectively, in the five-lap race. Kinser and Smith raced wheel-to-wheel through turn four as the green flag fell in the feature. They were side-by-side as they entered turn one, but Smith surged ahead in the second corner. Defending World of Outlaws champion Mark Kinser relegated Steve to third place with a turn-three pass late in the second lap. The Kinser cousins followed Smith into lapped traffic two laps later. A collision with Mike Dobmeier almost took Mark out of the race late in lap seven. He managed to keep the #5M Wirtgen Maxim under control - and in second place - as Dobmeier spun on the front straightaway, however. Smith raced away from the field as the green flag replaced the yellow, and opened a 12-car-length advantage within two laps. He caught the backmarkers again during the 11th lap. Sammy Swindell, a four-time winner at Red River Valley, steered his #1 Channellock Gambler into the high groove between turns three and four to pass Haudenschild for fourth place late in lap 14. A low move by Kinser in the third corner allowed him to return to the runner-up spot three laps later. Kinser narrowed the gap during the 18th lap, and almost passed Smith for the lead in turn four as they headed for the white flag. "The King of the Outlaws" made another run at Smith high in the first corner, then raced wheel-to-wheel with Smith down the back stretch. He surged ahead as Stevie took the low line through turn four and won a front-straightaway drag race to the checkered flag. "The car wouldn't run very well at the beginning of the race," Kinser explained. "We dropped back and I was searching for a place to make up ground. As we used up the fuel, the car started getting better. It got to where we were working pretty well in the middle. It just worked out to where we ended up winning the race." Mark and Swindell received the final two automatic starting positions in Saturday's Vivarin Dash by finishing third and fourth, respectively. Haudenschild finished fifth, ahead of Blaney, 12th-starting Greg Hodnett, First Heat Race winner Johnny Herrera, Andy Hillenburg and Danny Lasoski. World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year candidate Donny Schatz, a native of Minot, ND, drove the #15 Blue Beacon Gambler into 11th place.
