KINSER RECORDS FLAG-TO-FLAG VICTORY AT RED RIVER VALLEY By Richard Day FARGO, ND (July 10) - The throngs of fans who packed Red River Valley Speedway for the World of Outlaws' annual visit last weekend got an opportunity to put Steve Kinser under the proverbial microscope. On opening night, they saw him commit a rare error and lose the lead during the final lap. One night later, they learned that he rarely makes the same mistake twice. "I just screwed up last night," Kinser said during Sunday's feature racing program. "I should have gone around the lapped cars on the high side. I've won some races that way, and I gave one back the same way." Kinser wasn't about to let the same thing happen with an $8,200 first prize on the line and a capacity crowd in the stands Sunday night. Starting the 25-lap "A" Feature on the front row, Kinser drove the #11 Valvoline Maxim around polesitter and Snap-on Tools Dash winner Dave Blaney when the green flag fell and survived four caution periods en route to his 17th victory of the season. He opened a 10-car-length advantage during the opening lap, and was a full straightaway ahead of the field when fast-qualifier Sammy Swindell passed "The Buckeye Bullet" for the runner-up spot two laps later. Kinser caught the backmarkers just before Steve Dyer and his #9A Hymach Industries Bumbler went for a spin in the second corner five laps into the race. Bad luck hit the #1 Bull & Hannah's team when the green flag replaced the yellow. Swindell hit the restarting cone as he tried to pass Kinser for the lead, and was sent to the back of the pack. "The King of the Outlaws" ran away from the field on the next restart, and caught the backmarkers with a straightaway lead four laps later. With Kenny Jacobs challenging him for second place, Blaney had the #10 Vivarin J&J within a half-straightaway of the leader when Joe Gaerte spun out of fifth place and into the retaining wall between turns one and two early in the 15th lap. At that point, World of Outlaws officials called for the red flag to replace the yellow so the cars could be refueled for the race's final 10 laps. Andy Hillenburg, Jeff Shepard, Todd Mack and Donny Rae Schatz changed tires during the red period and restarted the race at the rear of the field. Six lapped cars restarted between Kinser and Blaney when the race resumed, allowing "The King of the Outlaws" to open a comfortable lead again. His advantage vanished with nine laps remaining when Greg Hodnett spun. Swindell was unable to dodge Hodnett's spinning #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim, and crashed. The #1 was towed into the pit area, and Sammy was credited with a 21st-place finish, dropping him into fourth in the Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout point standings. "The King of the Outlaws" ran away from the field again immediately after the green flag replaced the yellow. He caught the backmarkers with a full straightaway advantage with five laps remaining. Although Blaney managed to narrow the gap in traffic, he never made a serious run at the leader. Kinser took the checkered flag 10 car-lengths ahead of "The Buckeye Bullet." "The #11 Valvoline Maxim has been fast all weekend," Kinser said. "Everything went well for us tonight. I'm glad to be standing here in victory lane. "Everybody probably feels this way, but when we were leading there seemed to be a lot of yellows and reds. When we're back in the pack and need them, they never seem to fall." Jeff Swindell finished the main event in third place, ahead of Jac Haudenschild, Mark Kinser, Hillenburg, Jacobs, Stevie Smith, Johnny Herrera and Shepard. Mark, the 12th-fastest qualifier in the 29-car field, drove the #5M Maxim house car past 10 sprinters from his eighth-row starting position to finish fifth. 1994 WORLD OF OUTLAWS/COPENHAGEN-SKOAL SHOOTOUT Red River Valley Speedway, Fargo, ND, Sunday, July 10, Feature Program #36 Qualifications: Sammy Swindell, Gilliam 1, 16.998; 2.
