SWINDELL KEEPS STREAK ALIVE IN RED RIVER VALLEY OPENER By Richard Day WEST FARGO, ND (July 7) - Sammy Swindell tied the record for the longest string of feature victories on the World of Outlaws' 1995 tour Friday night, winning the Preliminary Feature at Red River Valley Speedway in flag-to-flag fashion. Mark Kinser won three consecutive feature races three times earlier this season. Two of the streaks featured him leading every lap. Friday's 20-lap run increased Swindell's consecutive laps string to 70. One problem Kinser didn't contend with was a broken steering mount, which Sammy discovered on his #1 Hooters Gambler during a sixth-lap red period. Despite his crew's inability to repair the problem, Swindell raced ahead of the 22-car field throughout the final 14 laps. Sammy's brother, Jeff, was racing through turn four when he took the checkered flag. Swindell, the fourth-fastest qualifier, earned the right to start the 20-lap feature on the front row by following Jeff across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. Jeff drove the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell in the evening's main event, only to have Sammy pass him high in turn one. Sammy, who won Skoal Outlaw Series "A" Features at Red River Valley in 1981 and 1983, opened a five-car-length advantage within two laps, and caught the backmarkers three laps later. He was taken out of lapped traffic the next time around when Donny Schatz flipped over the third-corner retaining wall, bringing out the red flag. His steering problem notwithstanding, Swindell opened a 10-car- length advantage within three laps after the race resumed. He caught the backmarkers again during the 12th lap. Although Jeff caught him amid a pack of backmarkers early in lap 14, Sammy was quicker through lapped traffic and built a half- straightaway advantage within three laps. "Everything was running well, except for the steering problem," Swindell said in victory lane. "The track was starting to get a little rough, which made it hard to hold on with a broken steering mount." While Sammy raced comfortably ahead of the field, the battle for fourth place between fast-qualifier Stevie Smith and Randy Hannagan raged throughout the second half of the race. Although he failed to pass Smith for the final automatic starting position in Saturday's Snap-on Tools Dash, Hannagan recorded his best finish in a World of Outlaws feature race this year. Skoal Outlaw Series point standings leader Jac Haudenschild finished the Preliminary Feature in third place, ahead of Smith, Hannagan, Andy Hillenburg, Greg Hodnett, 11th-starting Dave Blaney, Danny Lasoski and Joe Gaerte. Stevie received his fifth EcoWater Fast-Time Award of the year after clipping .046 seconds off the one-lap record Hillenburg set at Red River Valley two years ago. Smith circled the high-banked, 1/2- mile oval in 15.712 seconds, an average speed of 114.562 m.p.h. Kinser surrendered 10th place midway through the race when an engine malfunction forced him to drive the #5M Wirtgen Maxim into the pit area.
