Donny Schatz set to defend hometown champtionship title
FARGO, ND - June 11, 2003 - Donny Schatz is riding the tide of momentum as the #15 ParkerStore team rolls into their hometown of Fargo, ND for the big three-day Duel in the Dakotas.
Not only is Schatz the Red River Valley Speedway event's defending champion, winning on his home track in national World of Outlaws sprint car competition for the first time in July 2002; but scored a victory at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, ND on June 6 and finished second by a blink on June 10 at Fox Ridge Speedway, Arcadia, WI.
"It is a definite plus to come back to any track as the last event winner," said North Dakota native Schatz. "But coming into your hometown for a big race, it really helps the confidence of everyone on the team to have been running as well as we have the past few weeks. The Fargo event is a big week for my sponsors, family and friends. Although it is really busy, it is also great fun just to be home and around everyone for a few days. Winning last year was probably one of the most memorable races of my career. Repeating this year would be huge for everyone associated with our team - ParkerStores, Blue Beacon, Schatz Crossroad Truckstops, Bellerud Trucking and all the others. We just have to stick to what has been working for us and not get psyched out by adding additional pressure.
"The race on Friday in Grand Forks was fun. They offered me extra incentive to start in the back of the field and go for the win. I knew it wouldn't be easy because there were some great cars there with driver's who are real winners in the region. We just got a good rhythm going and had a couple of good breaks with yellow flags so we could get the win.
"It was the first time World of Outlaws had run at Fox Ridge Speedway so we were all on equal footing there. It is a wide track that holds a low and high groove. We had a good night with a solid second place finish. Now we are ready for Thursday night at Fargo."
In addition to the three-night racing schedule at Red River Valley Speedway beginning on Thursday, June 12, Schatz will be greeting fans at personal appearances with the #15 ParkerStore car and transporter on Thursday, June 12 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the West Fargo SUBWAY.
Fans can meet Schatz Friday, June 13 at SUBWAY and WINGATE INN on 19th Avenue SW directly across from PETRO right off I-94 from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
