Shaffer Gets Season First With Powercom Revenge

(Sept. 25, 2004) Tim Shaffer led all 40 laps of the World of Outlaws A-feature Saturday night at the Raceway at Powercom Park, avenging a heart-breaking defeat earlier in the year for his first victory of the season. Shaffer led the June 12 race until he was collected in a crash involving two lapped cars.

The night appeared to offer the same bad luck for Shaffer and his #6 Casey's General Stores Maxim. At the start of the first dash, Tim Kaeding's #83jr Beef Packers Eagle made contact with Shaffer, then slid across the front stretch and collected Terry McCarl. Both Kaeding and McCarl flipped hard into the infield. Neither driver was injured, but both cars were destroyed.

Shaffer started on the front row of the A feature and he took the lead as the green flag flew. Steve Kinser negotiated the #11 Quaker State Maxim past Donny Schatz's # 15 Parker Stores J&J on the opening lap to take second. Terry McCarl, hoping to salvage the night after his dash wreck dropped to the back of the field on the start and out after the first lap.

The red flag flew on lap 12 as Schatz flipped in turn three. He was running in third place at the time. Though his race was over, he left the scene unhurt. It was almost dejà vu for Shaffer as the lapped #28 Arnold Transportation Maxim of Brian Paulus spun in front of him on lap 18. Shaffer was able to evade the incident this time.

Nobody was able to touch Shaffer throughout the race as he won by 10 car lengths over Steve Kinser. It was also the first win for car owner Lonny Parsons. "We had a good car the last time here--I just had to use a little patience and not do anything stupid this time," Shaffer said. "The competition out here is just so tough--it'll beat you down in a hurry. I want to thank Lonny Parsons, Casey's General Stores, Housby Mack, it's just good to get a win and get the confidence back up."
