Port Royal, PA (May 6)-The last time a Pennzoil World of Outlaws series came to Port Royal it was 1986. Don Kreitz Jr. won. Fourteen years later, nothing has changed. Kreitz passed P.J. Chesson on lap 19 en route to the Gumout Racing Series win.
Kreitz earned the pole position after winning the Weld Racing Dash. P.J. Chesson won the Weld Race Components dash, putting him alongside Kreitz on the front row.
At the start, Kreitz pulled out in the lead. Chesson was in second, followed by Todd Shaffer, Craig Dollansky, and the #2F of Brad Furr. Dave Ely quickly passed Furr and Dollansky, moving into fourth position.
On lap three Chesson began closing in on the leader, with Ely taking third position from Shaffer.
Seventh starting Paul McMahan began battling Dollansky for fifth position. After several passes, Dollansky secured the position. He then went on to pass Shaffer for fourth position.
Kreitz's lead was diminished as Chesson began ducking low for the pass. Coming out of turn four on lap six Chesson began to slide but recovered. By lap eight the two cars were charging into lapped traffic. Chesson again took the high side to take the lead away from Kreitz.
At lap ten it was Chesson, then Kreitz, Dollansky in third, McMahan in fourth, and Ely rounding out the top five. Shaffer was in sixth, with rookie contender Brad Furr following. Len Thompson, 15th starting Jason Meyers and 17th starting Keith Kauffman finished off the top ten.
Lap 14 saw the first yellow of the night as Mike Goodman slowed to a stop on the front stretch.
At the restart Kreitz closed is on Chesson. On lap 17, Kreitz ducked in hopes of retaking the lead. At the flagstand the two competitors were even. Two laps later, Kreitz relinquished the lead.
Kreitz extended his lead, until lap 22 when a yellow was dropped for sixth running Keith Kauffman. Kauffman suffered a flat tire, but returned to the tail on the restart.
Lap 24 brought out another red as fourth place Dollansky spun in turn one collecting Furr. Neither cars restarted.
McMahan moved passed Chesson for second position coming out of turn one on lap 27. On the final lap, Ely also got by the young Chesson.
At the finish, Kreitz has over a straightaway lead on McMahan. Ely finished third, with Chesson and Meyers finishing out the top five.
Paul McMahan earned Huggins Fast Time honors with a time of 16.447.
Jason Meyers earned the KSE Hard Charger Award for moving from 15th to a fifth place finish.
Keith Kauffman won the Hank's Performance Products "B" Main.
Shane Stewart qualified for the Gumout Racing Series "A" main but was forced to scratch when he suffered engine failure during the Weld Race Components Dash. George Kulp in the #57 took Stewart's spot.
