Mark Wins Battle of Kinser Cousins at Pike County By Richard Day MAGNOLIA, MS (March 19) - Mark Kinser knows competition in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series is at an all-time high. That's why he was so happy to win Friday's "A" Feature in front of a standing-room- only crowd at Pike County Speedway. "There are at least 12 cars capable of winning every Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series race, and you saw that tonight," Mark said following his second main event victory of the season. Kinser's #5M Mopar Maxim was the class of the 32-car field Friday, however. Mark received his second Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the year for pacing the qualifying session with a 13.898-second, 97.136-m.p.h., lap around the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval. He won the First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race, then earned the right to start the "A" Feature inside the second row by following Frankie Kerr and cousin Steve Kinser across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. Steve, the leader in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series point standings when the race began, drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim around Kerr to take the lead as the green flag fell in the main event. Mark used an inside move in the third corner to pass Kerr for second place late in the opening lap. Danny Lasoski, who has also won two Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Features this season, passed Kerr for third place deep in turn one the next time around. Donny Schatz steered his family's #15 Parker Stores Maxim into the low line between the third and fourth corners to pass Kerr for fourth place as Mark challenged Steve for the lead during lap five. Donnie Crawford's turn-three spin brought out the caution flag and tightened the field one lap later. Mark battled Steve for first place as the race resumed, and passed him with a low move between turns three and four late in the eighth lap. Mark increased his lead as Danny Lasoski challenged Steve for second place during the next four laps, and was 12 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic during lap 12. Lasoski steered the #83 Beef Packers Eagle into the low groove between the first and second corners to pass "The King of the Outlaws" for second place one lap later. Schatz relegated Steve to fourth with a low move in turn four later in the 13th lap. Cautions for Travis Whitney's flat left rear tire and Daryn Pittman's second-corner spin tightened the field during the race's middle stages. "The Dude" was battling Mark for the lead late in lap 17 when Paul McMahan and Whitney collided in turn four. Schatz passed Lasoski for second and Kerr took fourth from Steve within seconds after the green flag replaced the yellow. Crawford spun into the #1BK Networks Eagle in turn two early in the 19th lap, knocking Johnny Herrera out of ninth place. Lasoski passed Schatz for the runner-up spot as the race resumed. Mark was three car-lengths ahead of "The Dude" when he caught the backmarkers again with five laps remaining. He negotiated traffic with ease and was eight car-lengths ahead of Lasoski when he took the checkered flag. The victory was Mark's second straight at Pike County. "Steve was running strong early, but we were working a different line," Mark said. "Then, on the restarts, I saw a couple of cars trying to get under me, so I dropped into the low groove. "As you can see, my crew is ecstatic. My dad (Mark's car owner and crew chief) gave me a great car tonight. "We have a long drive over to Houston (actually Highland, TX, for Saturday's race at Battleground Speedway), and we'll see if we can do it again." Lasoski, a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature winner at Pike County on April 2, 1995, regained the points lead by finishing second. Schatz held off Kerr to finish in third place, ahead of Steve Kinser, Tyler Walker, Terry McCarl, Sammy Swindell, Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Jeff Swindell and 18th-starting Stevie Smith. Andy Hillenburg drove his #2 Luxaire J&J into 14th place from outside the 10th row.
