Schatz and Walker finish in Top 20 at Copper World Classic.
R.E. Technologies Racing drivers Tyler Walker and Donny Schatz finished 16th and 18th respectively at the Copper World Classic at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday.
Schatz and Walker battled loose conditions and a difficult field in their debut for R.E. Technologies Racing. Walker's morning got off to a rough start when clutch problems developed during morning warm-ups. The R.E. Technologies-Curb-Agajanian team installed a new clutch in time for the race. Donny Schatz, candidate for Rookie of the Year, started 17th. Tyler Walker started 25th and worked his way up to 18th before brake problems developed on lap 47. Both teammates pitted during a yellow flag on lap 83 to change right rear tires. Walker drove his #35 "Curb-Agajanian Special" to a 16th place finish. "We learned a lot," said Walker. "We will take what we learned to the next race and get better." Donny Schatz piloted his Parker Stores-Schatz Crossroads #115 "Spirit of Knoxville" to an 18th place finish. "This was a good learning experience for me. We ran all 100 laps and finished in the top 20," said Schatz. "We will be ready for Indianapolis Raceway Park."
Donny qualified 17th quick Saturday. Tyler qualified 25th and started on the pole of the consolation race. Walker dominated the 15-lap event, leading from start to finish.
The Copper World Classic was the first race for several new team members and totally new J&J chassis. The cars were assembled just days before the event after testing in Phoenix. "If we had been able to anticipate the condition that caused both cars to be loose, I am confident we would have been a contender," said team owner Roger Johnson. "I was impressed with Tyler and Donny. They exhibited smoothness and patience. Both qualities required winning at this level. They also displayed the ability to continue with an ill handling race car."
The R.E. Technologies race team has two test sessions scheduled before its next race on May 10th. "The chassis needs more development time," said Johnson. "Curb Records and Parker Stores will no doubt have plenty to celebrate as we move into the main portion of the racing season."
Donny Schatz and Tyler Walker will continue their pursuit of the USAC Weld Racing Silver Crown Series Championship May 10th during the Hoosier 100 at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
