Mark Kinser Completes Sweep of Perris Event By Richard Day LAKE PERRIS, CA (November 2) - Although rain postponed the festivities, it didn't dampen the spirits of the many fans who witnessed the Skoal Outlaw Series' finale at Perris Auto Speedway Saturday. With World of Outlaws points leader Mark Kinser and two-time champion Sammy Swindell exchanging the lead three times in the final five laps of the "A" Feature, every fan in the capacity crowd was standing. When the checkered flag fell, it was Kinser and the #5M Wirtgen Maxim less than a car-length ahead of Swindell's #1 Channellock Gambler in one of the most exciting finishes of the season. While Mark earned the right to start the 30-lap main event on the pole by winning the Vivarin Dash for the 33rd time this year, it was Swindell - the outside polesitter - who took the lead at the drop of the green flag. Sammy was racing away from the field when a broken fuel pump on the #69 Pioneer Concrete Maxim caused Brent Kaeding to stop in turn two early in the third lap, bringing out the first caution flag. Craig Dollansky followed "The King of California" into the pits within seconds after the race resumed, hitting the turn-four retaining wall and flipping down the front straightaway. Swindell was on the go again as the green flag replaced the red, entering lapped traffic with a six-car-length advantage by lap seven. Two laps later, a split-second after being passed by Sammy, "B" Feature winner Donny Schatz and the #15 Blue Beacon Truck Wash Gambler jumped the cushion in the first corner and flipped in front of the rest of the field. Kinser raised the #5M's front tires off the racing surface as he tried to keep pace with the leader on the ensuing restart, allowing Swindell to quickly open a six-car-length advantage. Andy Hillenburg challenged defending Skoal Outlaw Series champion Dave Blaney as the race resumed, and raced past him for third place early in lap 10. Swindell was five car-lengths ahead of Mark when he caught the backmarkers again during the 13th lap. With Hillenburg pressuring him for second place, Mark narrowed the gap to two car-lengths in dense lapped traffic within four laps, however. Kinser caught Sammy early in the 21st lap, then Hillenburg and Blaney joined the battle for first place three laps later. Although Sammy's brakes malfunctioned with eight laps remaining, he managed to maintain the lead for another 2 1/2 laps. Mark took the lead for the first time with a third-corner pass of Swindell late in the 26th lap. Two laps later, Sammy returned the favor, taking the inside line through turn two and winning a back-straightaway drag race. Kinser executed the winning pass early in the final lap, threading the #5M between Sammy and the inside berm in turn one and surging ahead in the second corner. Although Swindell was never more than a car-length away, he was unable to deny Mark his 26th victory of the year. The $9,000 victory gave Kinser a 394-point advantage over "The Buckeye Bullet" with only Wednesday's Las Vegas Motor Speedway event remaining on the World of Outlaws' 1996 schedule. The double-feature sweep was Mark's fifth this season. Hillenburg held off Blaney to claim third place. Danny Lasoski finished fifth, ahead of Third Heat Race winner Jeff Swindell, Steve Kinser, Fourth Heat Race winner Jac Haudenschild, Johnny Herrera and 19th-starting Stevie Smith. A seventh-place finish ended another roller-coaster evening for "The King of the Outlaws." He was battling Lasoski for third place during a restart in the First Heat Race when they stopped to avoid a collision with Kaeding. Calvin Landis collided with the #11 Quaker State Maxim, flattening Steve's right rear tire. Kinser finished sixth in the heat race, second in the "B" Feature and started inside the fifth row in the main event lineup.
