Mark Kinser Dominates Perris Opener By Richard Day LAKE PERRIS, CA (November 1) - Opening night of the Skoal Outlaw Series event at Perris Auto Speedway Friday produced several firsts. First of all, it was the series' inaugural visit to Lake Perris' state-of-the-art, semi-banked, 1/2-mile racing facility. Secondly, Mark Kinser moved so close to his first World of Outlaws championship he can almost taste it. In addition, first-year driver Joey Saldana took another big step toward the 1996 Rookie of the Year Award. And, unfortunately for Steve Kinser, a rocky night for "The King of the Outlaws" could keep him out of the top three in the points race for the first time in his career. Sammy Swindell's runner-up run, coupled with Kinser's 23rd-place finish, pushed Sammy 20 points ahead of Steve with 1 1/2 events remaining in the 1996 season. Kinser finished ninth in the point standings last year, but only because he missed the first 11 events. Mark received his 41st EcoWater Quick-Time Award of the year for pacing time trials with a 14.144-second qualifying lap. Of the 47 cars in the field, 42 of them eclipsed the previous one- lap record. It was the 21st track record Mark broke this season. Saldana won the Vivarin Dash from the outside pole, edging Mark, who started outside the third row. Joey's third Vivarin Dash victory of the season allowed him to start the Preliminary Feature on the pole. Mark won a front-straightaway drag race with Saldana within seconds after the green flag fell in the evening's main event. Dave Blaney and Stevie Smith passed second-row starter Andy Hillenburg as Kinser drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim away from the field during the opening lap. Kinser opened a 10-car-length advantage as Swindell challenged Saldana for the runner-up spot during the first three laps. Mark was a half-straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic six laps into the race. After two attempts to pass Saldana in the low groove failed, Sammy steered his #1 Channellock Gambler around him high in the second corner to take over the runner-up spot early in lap nine. Blaney took Joey to school the next time around, using a similar move in turn three to take third place from the young rookie. Kinser raced through lapped traffic with ease as Hillenburg - the 1988 Rookie of the Year - battled Saldana for fourth place during the race's middle stages. Swindell narrowed the gap to 10 car-lengths as Mark followed a pack of backmarkers during the 12th and 13th laps. Mark was breaking out of lapped traffic with five laps remaining when an all-too-familiar fate befell his cousin, Steve Kinser. "The King of the Outlaws" was challenging Smith for sixth place when he allowed his #11 Quaker State Maxim to clip the fourth-corner retaining wall, damaging his front end. By the time Steve reached turn one, the #11 was flipping. Earlier in the evening, Steve was challenging Jac Haudenschild for the final transfer position in the Third Quaker State Heat Race when he hit the wall in turn four before coasting into the pit area. He won the "B" Feature and lined up outside the fifth row in the evening's main event. With two backmarkers separating Mark and Sammy, the World of Outlaws' points leader raced away from the field as the green flag replaced the red. He opened a six-car-length advantage within a lap and cruised to his ninth Preliminary Feature victory of the season. Hillenburg passed Saldana for fourth place with two laps remaining to join Mark, Sammy, and Blaney as the drivers with guaranteed starting positions in Saturday's Vivarin Dash. While Saldana ran fifth, Lance Blevins finished 17th, giving Joey a 156-point lead in the Rookie of the Year standings. Smith finished the Preliminary Feature in sixth place, ahead of Danny Lasoski, Johnny Herrera, Jeff Swindell and 15th-starting Joe Gaerte.
