KINSER KEEPS STREAK ALIVE WITH WEST VIRGINIA VICTORY By Richard Day PARKERSBURG, WV (May 21) - "I can't tell you how easy it is to drive this car," Mark Kinser said Sunday after driving the #5M Wirtgen Maxim to victory before a near-capacity crowd at West Virginia Motor Speedway. "I've never had so much fun in my whole life." Yes, life on the World of Outlaws' tour is good for Mark Kinser these days. Winning the "A" Features at Metrolina Speedway and West Virginia Motor Speedway ran his season total to seven and pushed him into second place in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings. Mark has already won more main events than he ever has in any one season. His previous high water mark was five. Kinser opened Sunday's festivities by running the first sub-17-second qualifying lap in the history of West Virginia Motor Speedway. He received his fifth Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year after circling the high- banked, 5/8-mile oval in 16.915 seconds, an average speed of 133.018 m.p.h. Finishing second in the Vivarin Dash behind Andy Hillenburg gave Mark the luxury of starting the 30-lap main event on the outside pole. Mark burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature. The start was called back, however, when the engine in the #71M Ecowater Systems Maxim stalled, sending Stevie Smith to the pits with a 23rd-place finish. Kinser duplicated his move around Hillenburg in turn four when the green flag fell again, and opened a 15-car-length lead within three laps. The caution flag was flying again the next time around when Ed Lynch, Jr., and Gus Wasson suffered mechanical problems and stopped on the racing surface. Mark ran away from the field again as the green flag replaced the yellow, and had returned to his 15-car-length comfort zone by lap six. He was a full straightaway ahead of Hillenburg when he entered lapped traffic two laps later. Steve Kinser, a three-time winner at West Virginia, started pressuring Hillenburg for the runner-up spot midway through the race. Jeff Swindell surprised both Andy and Steve the next time around, driving the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim past them in turn three. Steve took third from Hillenburg deep in the third corner two laps later, and Jac Haudenschild relegated Andy to fifth during the 19th lap. Mark was half a lap ahead of Swindell when his engine suffered a broken rocker arm with eight laps remaining. He managed to maintain a comfortable margin, however, and lapped up to ninth place before taking the checkered flag. Swindell held off Steve Kinser to finish second. Haudenschild and Lasoski rounded out the top five. Dave Blaney earned his first Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award of the year for racing into sixth place from his sixth- row starting position. Hillenburg finished seventh, ahead of Sammy Swindell, Greg Hodnett and Dale Blaney. The Skoal Outlaw Series is scheduled to open its annual Pennsylvania tour at Lernerville Speedway Tuesday, then run double-feature events at Williams Grove Speedway Thursday and Friday, and Hagerstown Speedway Saturday and Sunday.
