Walker Runs Manzanita Streak to Three in Preliminary By Richard Day PHOENIX, AZ (February 26) - Many who witnessed the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' Western World Championships at Manzanita Speedway - in the stands and on TNN Motorsports - a couple of years ago, still remember Tyler Walker punching his top wing after crashing. Walker had nothing but good things to say about his family's #35 Air Sep Maxim Friday after winning the Preliminary Feature when the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series opened a double-feature event at Manzanita. The victory was his third straight at Phoenix' legendary semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. "The first three times we came to Manzanita, we couldn't do anything right," Walker said. "The last three times, we can't do anything wrong. "I have to thank Air Sep, K&N Filters, Maxim race cars, Sander Engineering and Shaver motors. Without them, I wouldn't be here." Walker wouldn't have made it to victory lane had he not executed a daring move between Joe Gaerte and Terry McCarl in the third corner with six laps remaining. The move allowed Walker to open a 12-car- length advantage on Mark Kinser with 5 1/3 laps remaining. Ironically, turn three was where Walker crashed and punched his top wing the year Mark won the Western World. Kinser, who saw his seven-race winning streak at Perris Auto Speedway end a week ago, was in the fourth corner when Walker took the checkered flag. Walker, the Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner, earned the right to start the Preliminary Feature outside the second row by following Joey Saldana, Dale Blaney and Frankie Kerr across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. Blaney took the high line around Saldana as the green flag fell in the feature. Walker followed Blaney into the high groove in turn one to pass Saldana, then took the lead with a second-corner pass of the 1998 Manufacturers Rookie of the Year. Walker was a straightaway ahead of Blaney when he entered lapped traffic five laps into the 20-lap race. Dale surrendered second place when he took the #93 Amoco J&J for a spin in turn two the next time around. Brooke Tatnell flipped in the fourth corner as the green flag replaced the yellow, bringing out the red flag. Daryn Pittman rolled over when the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim lost its left rear wheel as the race resumed. Tatnell's and Pittman's crews repaired their cars during the red period, allowing them to restart the race. Walker controlled the ensuing restart and was catching the backmarkers when Kasey Kahne hit the wall in turn one and flipped. Defending Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion Steve Kinser challenged Saldana as the green flag replaced the red, but was unable to take over second place. Mark Kinser passed both Saldana and his cousin within the next 1 1/2 laps and caught Walker in dense lapped traffic during lap 14. Walker's daring move between Gaerte and McCarl gave him some breathing room the next time around and he maintained that advantage en route to the $5,000 victory. "Sometimes the lapped cars just fall your way, and for me they did tonight," Walker said. "This is the momentum builder we need. We started off the year pretty rough, but compared to last year when we trashed a car on the first night and missed the feature on the second night, we're way ahead. I can't wait to come back and do it again tomorrow." Steve Kinser, winner of seven Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Features at Manzanita, passed Saldana for third with a low move between the first and second corners early in the 19th lap. Johnny Herrera finished fifth, ahead of Sammy Swindell, Andy Hillenburg, Danny Lasoski, Craig Dollansky and 21st-starting Jeff Swindell. Steve Kinser received his first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season for pacing the qualifying session with a 15.853-second, 113.543-m.p.h., lap. 1999 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Manzanita Speedway, Phoenix, AZ Friday, February 26, Preliminary Program
