Kinser Sets Royal Example at Kentucky Lake By Richard Day CALVERT CITY, KY (May 11) -- If Danny Lasoski bearing down on him in the points race didn't give Steve Kinser enough incentive to win Thursday at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway, his son Kraig running in his first Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series event provided even more. "The King of the Outlaws" set quite an example for his young son, starting outside the sixth row and leading the final 25 1/4 laps to claim the $10,000 first prize. Kinser's fourth "A" Feature victory of the season gave him a 20-point advantage over "The Dude" heading into the Winged Thunder event at the Terre Haute Action Track. "This Maxim car and Hoosier tires were perfect tonight," Steve said, "and the crew did such a good job. We've been pretty fast everywhere this year and when you go into a race with a lot of confidence it plays a big part in it. "Having Kraig race with us is really special. He probably gained more experience tonight than in three weekends of weekly racing." Kraig, the 29th-fastest qualifier in the 37-car field, finished ninth in the First NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race and eighth in the "B" Feature. Steve qualified almost a half-second faster than his son, but was .650 seconds off Stevie Smith's record-setting pace. Smith lowered the qualifying standard by an amazing 1.029 seconds, driving his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit around the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval in 11.879 seconds, an average speed of 113.646 m.p.h. The effort earned Stevie his second Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season. Kinser finished fourth in the Second NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race and sixth in the Second CHANNELLOCK Dash. He lined up next to Smith on the sixth row in the 30-lap main event. Several early crashes marred the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 15th "A" Feature of the year. Pole-sitter Dale Blaney raced into the lead, but his second-corner spin collected Tim Shaffer and Second NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race winner Johnny Herrera. First NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race winner Daryn Pittman took over first place when the race resumed, only to have Dean Jacobs spin in turn two. The caution gave the Amoco crew time to repair the #93 Maxim and return Blaney to the race. Pittman burst into the lead when the green flag replaced the yellow. Fellow Oklahoman Andy Hillenburg took the low line through the third and fourth corners to pass Sammy Swindell for third place late in the opening lap. Lasoski and Kinser relegated Swindell to fifth place the next time around. Kinser steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim to the lowest point in turn four to pass Hillenburg and "The Dude" to take over second place late in the fourth lap. Mark Kinser stopped in the third corner with a flag right rear tire after the leaders completed lap four. "The King of the Outlaws" kept pace with Pittman as the race resumed, and took the lead with an inside move in turn four. Lasoski and Tyler Walker stayed in the low groove and passed Hillenburg for third and fourth place, respectively, during laps six and seven. Kinser was a straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic nine laps into the race. He almost lost the lead completely late in the ninth lap when Randy Hannagan and Brian Paulus tangled in front of him in turn four. Lance Blevins, who started the #21 PC Joey Eagle outside the ninth row, raced past 13 cars during the first 10 laps. He took the low line into turn three to pass Lasoski and Walker as the race resumed. Lance continued his run to the front two laps later, passing Pittman deep in the fourth corner. Kinser caught the backmarkers with a full straightaway advantage midway through the race. Pittman surrendered third place the next time around, stopping in the first corner with a flat right rear tire. Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year points leader Danny Wood started making his way toward the front following a 19th-lap restart, passing Joey Saldana and Blevins for second place. Saldana suffered a flat right rear tire early in the 29th lap, setting up a two-lap dash to the checkered flag. Kinser raced away from the field, Lasoski took the high line around Blevins to claim fourth place and Wood faded on the restart. Walker was seven car-lengths behind Kinser at the finish line. "You could pretty much run anywhere tonight," Steve said. "The track was really smooth. The top was pretty fast, but it almost took rubber in the middle toward the end. I took the lead there, and the car felt so good I thought I could get by five or six lapped cars, but the cautions hurt our chances to do that." Hillenburg finished third, ahead of Lasoski, Blevins, Swindell, 22nd-starting Brooke Tatnell, Mark Kinser, Jacobs and Wood.
