Mark Kinser Builds Confidence With Eldora Victory By Richard Day ROSSBURG, OH (June 3) -- Mark Kinser has always been fast at Eldora Speedway. He holds the single-lap record at the "World's Fastest Half-Mile" -- 140.735 m.p.h. -- but, before Saturday, had won only two Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series main events there. The defending series champion passed Ohioan Kenny Jacobs late in the 17th lap and held off cousin and Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Steve Kinser to win his fifth "A" Feature of the season. The $10,000 victory put Mark 90 points behind Steve as the series headed for Sunday's event at the Terre Haute Action Track. "The track was pretty tough tonight and having Steve behind me those last couple laps didn't make it any easier," Mark said. "My crew got this one for me. They mounted a million different tires tonight, and changed the setup just about every time we went out on the track. We put a new Mopar motor in last night and it gave us everything we wanted. This should give us a little confidence boost for the next time we come back here (for the King's Royal) in July." Mark, the eighth-fastest qualifier in the 34-car field, won the Fourth NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race. His third-place finish in the Second CHANNELLOCK Dash put him outside the third row in the "A" Feature line-up. Front-row starters Jacobs and Jeff Shepard raced wheel-to-wheel through turn one as the green flag fell in the 30-lap main event. Jacobs took the lead by surging ahead in the second corner. Jacobs was six car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic six laps into the race. Stevie Smith was challenging Shepard for second place when Johnny Herrera stopped the #20 Networks Eagle in turn one with a damaged right rear wheel two laps later. Paul McMahan brought out the caution flag again late in the 11th lap when he stopped on the back straightaway. Mark Kinser steered the #5M Mopar Maxim deep in turn three to pass Smith for third place as the race resumed. Cousin Steve used a similar move in the second corner to pass Smith the next time around. Mark took over second place with an inside move past Shepard in turn three midway through the race. Mark caught Jacobs quickly and passed him for the lead deep in the fourth corner late in the 17th lap. He was racing away from the field one lap later when Donny Schatz stopped the #15 Parker Stores Maxim in turn four with a flat right rear tire. Steve Kinser, winner of 23 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Features at Eldora Speedway, passed Shepard and Jacobs during the 18th and 19th laps. He lined up behind Mark four laps later after Brooke Tatnell stopped on the back stretch with an engine fire. Dale Blaney steered the #93 Amoco Maxim into the low groove between turns three and four to pass Smith for fifth place as the green flag replaced the red. Jacobs faded late in the race as mud packed his right rear wheel. Shepard beat him down the back straightaway during lap 26 and Jacobs surrendered fourth place when he stopped on the back stretch two laps later. Jac Haudenschild started outside the eighth row and passed 10 cars during the first 27 laps. He steered the #22 fetchOmatic.com Maxim deep in the second corner to pass Smith for fifth place early in the 29th lap. Steve Kinser was driving his #11 Quaker State Maxim through turn four when Mark took the checkered flag. Shepard held off Blaney for third place. Haudenschild finished fifth, ahead of Dean Jacobs, 22nd-starting Greg Hodnett, Smith, Danny Wood and Sammy Swindell. Swindell overcame all kinds of problems before claiming his 17th top-10 finish of the year. He was running third in the First NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race when the rear end in his #1 CHANNELLOCK Stealth malfunctioned. He was in second place in the "B" Feature when an engine problem forced him out of that race. He took a provisional and passed 15 cars on his way to a 10th-place finish in the "A" Feature. Tim Shaffer, who claimed the first main event victory of his Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series career at Eldora Speedway last June 5th, fell victim to engine trouble while leading the First NAPA AUTO PARTS Heat Race. He won the "B" Feature, then drove the #11H Vivarin Eagle into 12th place in the "A" Feature. Butch Schroeder received the first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of his career after pacing time trials with a 138.175-m.p.h. lap. WoO
