BLANEY TAKES ORANGE COUNTY FEATURE AS KINSERS CRASH By Richard Day MIDDLETOWN, NY (June 4) - Mark and Steve Kinser were racing wheel-to- wheel with the checkered flag in sight Sunday at Orange County Speedway when they collided and spun to a stop on the front straightaway. Dave Blaney, so far behind the leaders that he didn't even see the crash, restarted the race at the front of the field and led the final lap for his second World of Outlaws "A" Feature victory of the year. Mark and Steve restarted at the back of the pack and finished 16th and 17th, respectively. "We were a third-place car tonight," Blaney admitted in victory lane. "I never saw the crash. I just saw the yellow come out and them sitting on the track." The $34,485 event, run before a capacity crowd, got the World of Outlaws' annual spring tour of New York off to a raucous start. The Skoal Outlaw Series was scheduled to run events at five different tracks in as many nights before heading to the Midwest. The Kinser cousins, winners of eight of the 12 "A" Features the Skoal Outlaw Series has run at Orange County, battled for the lead in every turn on Middletown's semi-banked, 5/8-mile oval during the second half of the 25-lap race. Steve took the low line into turn three and they raced side-by-side out of the fourth corner as they headed toward the finish line. They were on a collision course, but neither slowed nor swerved. Their Maxim chassis collided, and Mark hit the inside retaining wall while Steve spun to a stop approximately 30 feet from the finish line. Mark, the Vivarin Dash winner, took the lead from the pole as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature. He opened a six-car-length lead within two laps and entered lapped traffic with a 12-car-length advantage three laps later. Jac Haudenschild, the outside polesitter, narrowed the gap as the #5M Wirtgen Maxim almost hit the outside retaining wall while Mark passed Tom Toedter early in the fifth lap. Steve, who started directly behind Mark, steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim deep into the second corner to take the runner-up spot from "The Wild Child" early in lap nine. Blaney relegated Haudenschild to fourth place the next time around, only to have Jac steer the #22 Pennzoil Maxim under him in turn two during the 11th lap. Steve started pressuring Mark for the lead midway through the race, practically pushing him through the second corner early in lap 13. They raced wheel-to-wheel through the fourth corner three laps later, but Mark maintained the lead by winning a drag race to the finish line. "The Buckeye Bullet" passed Haudenschild for third place with six laps remaining, but was unable to catch the leaders. Steve made another run at the lead in the third corner late in the 23rd lap, but Mark was equal to the challenge. All their efforts were dashed two laps later when they took each other out of the race. "The Buckeye Bullet" received his third Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award of the year for winning the "A" Feature from the third row. The victory moved Blaney into a tie for third place in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings with Danny Lasoski. Haudenschild was four car-lengths behind when Blaney took the checkered flag. Stevie Smith finished the main event in third place, ahead of Andy Hillenburg, Jeff Swindell, First Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Lasoski, Greg Hodnett, Aaron Berryhill, Randy Hannagan and Lance Blevins.
