Smith Wins Waiting Game at Orange County By Richard Day MIDDLETOWN, NY (June 1) - Stevie Smith learned how to play the waiting game in the nine months leading up to his daughter's birth. He patiently waited through Sunday's 1 1/2-hour rain delay in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' event at Orange County Fair Speedway before winning his first "A" Feature of the year. Smith and his wife, Kendra, became the proud parents of Shaylee Suzanne Smith late Thursday night. Three days later, following the World of Outlaws' New Your tour opener, Stevie celebrated a $10,000 victory. "I owe most of the credit to my crew, Devin (Deluzio) and my dad," Smith said in victory lane. "I've been telling them each race, 'it's getting better and better,' and they've said, 'why aren't we winning?' I just told them we're racing with a lot of good cars. Winning against all these good cars is a big plus for our team." Eleven of those "good cars" recorded qualifying laps faster than the single-lap record Johnny Herrera set on June 6, 1993. Mark Kinser, the fastest of the 11, set the new qualifying standard with a 17.038-second lap around the semi-banked, 5/8- mile oval, an average speed of 132.058 m.p.h. The record-breaking effort earned Mark his sixth Channellock Fast-Time Award of the season. Smith, the fifth-fastest qualifier in the 29-car field, earned the right to start the 25-lap "A" Feature outside the front row by following First Heat Race winner Sammy Swindell across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. Stevie drove his #19 Smith around Swindell in turn four to take the lead as the green flag fell in the main event and opened a seven-car-length advantage midway through the opening lap. Smith built a 10-car-length advantage within four laps and entered lapped traffic five laps into the race. Stevie's progress was interrupted four laps later when a second-corner collision involving Rookie of the Year candidates Paul McMahan and Donny Schatz caused McMahan and the #75 Mopar Stealth to turn over. Schatz, the "B" Feature winner, joined McMahan in the pits two laps later when he allowed the #15 Blue Beacon Gambler to flip in turn three. Changing the left-side header on the #19 allowed Smith to race away from the field as the green flag replaced the red. Andy Hillenburg battled Kinser for sixth place on the restart. After meeting Hillenburg's challenge, Mark drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim past Greg Hodnett on the back straightaway to take over fifth. Stevie was a half-straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic again during lap 16. Kinser caught Jac Haudenschild the next time around, but was unable to pass him during the final nine laps. Smith opened a full-straightaway advantage with seven laps remaining, and took the checkered flag with Swindell racing in the third corner. The victory, Stevie's first of the year, made him the eighth driver to win a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature this year. "I didn't really know how big a lead we had," Smith said, "but I didn't want to run over a lapped car and take myself out. The car was running so good, I could move it anywhere, and that makes a big difference when you get to lapped traffic. "This is a great way to start off this (New York) swing. It's always tough up here. These are some tough tracks. We're off to a good start. I hope we can keep it up." Steve Kinser, winner of five World of Outlaws "A" Features at Orange County, finished third. Haudenschild held off Mark Kinser for fourth place. Completing the top 10 in the main event were Hodnett, Hillenburg, Dave Blaney, Danny Lasoski and Joe Gaerte. Jeff Swindell earned passing honors by driving the #7TW Gold Eagle J&J into 11th place from outside the eighth row.
