Stevie Smith Paints Middletown Black By Richard Day MIDDLETOWN, NY (August 2) - Steve Smith, last year's Channellock Mechanic of the Year, is getting the #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit dialed in at just the right time of the year, and Stevie Smith couldn't be happier. Stevie, who led the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series with 13 "A" Feature victories a year ago, won his second straight race Monday at Orange County Fair Speedway. The $8,000 victory was Smith's third in succession at the semi-banked, 5/8-mile oval. "A car that handles as good as this one did tonight makes a big difference, especially in traffic," Smith said. "I think we got our first fast-time of the year tonight. The crew did a good job all night long. We haven't had much luck when we've come back here (to the East coast), but this time I guess we did well (four top-three finishes, including two victories, in four races). This is a good time of the year to be running good. I just hope we can keep it up." Smith received his first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season after pacing the qualifying session with a 17.709-second, 127.054- m.p.h., lap. He earned the right to start the 25-lap "A" Feature next to polesitter Sammy Swindell by racing into second place from outside the second row in the Channellock Dash. Swindell, a two-time winner at the Orange County Fair, burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event. Smith caught him in turn one, however, and passed Sammy for the lead high in the second corner. Smith was a full straightaway ahead of Swindell when he entered lapped traffic four laps into the race. He raced through the backmarkers with ease, and increased his advantage when he approached dense traffic four laps later. Dale Blaney challenged First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Donny Schatz for fourth place in turn three late in the 19th lap, but was unable to surge ahead. Swindell surrendered second place when the engine in his #1 Channellock Stealth lost power two laps later. Steve Kinser, winner of five Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Features at Orange County, steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the low groove in the fourth corner to pass Blaney as the race resumed. Tyler Walker, who thrilled the crowd by driving the #35 Air Sep Maxim higher on the track than anybody else in the 24-car field, was in second place when he ran into problems with less than two laps remaining. He was trying to pass Daryn Pittman when the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim suffered a broken rear end. Pittman drifted across the track and collided with Walker, who hit the wall and flipped. Two lapped cars separated Smith and Schatz when the green flag replaced the red. Schatz passed them quickly, but was seven car- lengths behind when Smith took the checkered flag for the 50th main event victory of his Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series career. Kinser finished third in the series' 49th event of the year, ahead of Blaney, Danny Lasoski, Tim Shaffer, Johnny Herrera, Jeff Swindell, Lance Blevins and Andy Hillenburg. Lasoski's 30th top-five run of the season, coupled with Mark Kinser's 21st-place finish, pushed "The Dude" to within 99 points of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points lead. The #5M Mopar Maxim suffered a rear end failure early in the main event. Brooke Tatnell started inside the eighth row and drove the #7K Kele & Associates J&J past four sprinters to finish in 11th place. WoO
