WORLD OF OUTLAWS TO SANCTION ONE/THIRD-MILE NATIONALS By Richard Day EAGLE, NE (September 7) - The World of Outlaws will sanction Eagle Raceway's One/Third-Mile Nationals on September 21st, series President Ted Johnson announced Wednesday. The 13th Annual One/Third-Mile Nationals was not a part of the original 1994 Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout racing schedule. It was added when the series cancelled the Santa Maria Speedway event scheduled for September 11th. The inaugural One/Third Mile Nationals was run in 1968. The prestigious event was won by Gordon Wooley, Dick Sutcliffe, Lonnie Jensen, Ray Lee Goodwin, Jimmy Boyd, Eddie Leavitt and Jan Opperman before being cancelled in 1975. The event was resurrected by the World of Outlaws in 1989 and has been a regular event on the series' schedule ever since. Steve and Mark Kinser have each won a pair of One/Third-Mile Nationals championships in the last four years. Steve, winner of the Eagle Nationals on July 3rd, will be considered the man to beat when the green flag falls in the 14th running of the One/Third-Mile Nationals. "The King of the Outlaws" wouldn't blame promoters Marty and John Beecham if they wait to sign the winner's check until the checkered flag falls in the 30-lap "A" Feature. "With the guys we have out here, I could be racing with five or six guys to win a race ... and there could be five or six others racing up front the next night," Kinser said earlier this season. Among those expected to run with the leaders at the One/Third-Mile Nationals include former Eagle Nationals champions Jeff Swindell, Sammy Swindell and Jac Haudenschild. Other World of Outlaws front-runners who have come close, but have never won a main event at Eagle Raceway, include Dave Blaney, Andy Hillenburg, Kenny Jacobs, Joe Gaerte, Greg Hodnett, Stevie Smith and Johnny Herrera.
