SWINDELLS CRASH OUT OF LEAD; KINSER WINS AT MILLSTREAM By Richard Day FINDLAY, OH (June 12) - First place was definitely not the place to be during the first 22 laps of the World of Outlaws' "A" Feature at Millstream Speedway Sunday night ... especially if your last name was Swindell. Jeff Swindell, then brother Sammy, raced ahead of the field before crashing, and Steve Kinser picked up the pieces for the $5,200 victory. Jeff started the 30-lap main event outside the front row, next to Vivarin Dash winner Dave Blaney. He steered the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim around "The Buckeye Bullet" in turn four to take the lead immediately after the green flag fell. Following a caution period - for Tim Clark's second-corner spin - and a red period - for Todd Heller's turn-two flip and Greg Hodnett's back- straightaway tumble - Kinser passed Sammy and Jac Haudenschild for third place with a daring, inside move in turn three on the ensuing restart. After Jack Hewitt spun to a stop in turn three early in the fourth lap, Blaney challenged Jeff for the lead, only to be turned away. The leaders entered lapped traffic four laps later. Kinser drove the #11 Valvoline Maxim past Blaney deep in the third corner late in lap nine, and closed in on the leader as Jeff approached Hewitt and Steve Beitler the next time around. A front-end malfunction on the #9TW Gaerte Engines Maxim caused Joe Gaerte to hit the second-corner retaining wall in front of the leaders early in the 12th lap. Unable to dodge the #9TW as it slid across the racing surface, Jeff crashed and was unable to continue racing. The race resumed with Kinser in the lead. But Sammy regained first place for the Swindell family by steering the #1 Bull & Hannah's Jenkins around "The King of the Outlaws" in turn four within seconds after the green flag replaced the red. Sammy was 10 car-lengths ahead of Kinser as he caught the backmarkers midway through the race. Steve closed to within five car-lengths within three laps, but almost hit the wall as made his way around Sid Blandford in the first corner. While this enabled Sammy to return to his 10-car-length comfort zone, it only made his fate more disappointing. Two laps later, Hodnett stopped the #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim in turn four with a flat left rear tire. When the race resumed, Sammy took the high road into the third corner and nicked the back-straightaway wall. The impact flattened his right rear tire and sent him into the wall between turns three and four. Kinser wasn't about to let anybody pass him on the final restart. He raced comfortably ahead of the field during the final eight laps, and took the checkered flag with Blaney racing into the fourth corner. The victory, the 12th of the year for "The King of the Outlaws," was the fifth of his career at Millstream Speedway. "The Wild Child" finished the main event in third place, ahead of Mark Kinser, 12th-starting Frankie Kerr, Andy Hillenburg, Kenny Jacobs, Kelly Kinser, Gaerte, Byron Reed and Hodnett. Kelly, one of three Kinser cousins in the 23-car field, steered the #4K Kinser Timber Stealth past nine sprinters from the ninth row to finish eighth. Sammy's 14.647-second (92.169-m.p.h.) qualifying lap, only .307 seconds off the one-lap record Blaney set at Millstream in 1988, earned him his third straight Ecowater Fast-Time Award.
