KINSER WINS HIS THIRD STRAIGHT WORLD OF OUTLAWS FEATURE By Richard Day MESQUITE, TX (March 17) - Mark Kinser says he feels like the weight of the world is on his shoulders. The pressure of succeeding Steve Kinser as Karl Kinser's driver is bringing out the best in him, however, and has him leading the World of Outlaws' point standings. Kinser drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim to his third straight Skoal Outlaw Series feature victory when the World of Outlaws opened the 22nd Annual Spring Nationals at Devil's Bowl Speedway Friday night. "It's pretty tough running for my dad," Mark admitted after winning the Vivarin Dash to gain the pole position in the Preliminary Feature. "My dad demands 100 percent concentration from his driver. I feel like I've always had that before. Now, running with my dad, it's paying off more. He can be tough to please, but I couldn't be happier than I am right now. The car's really been running well." Mark, the second-fastest qualifier, beat Ecowater Fast-Time Award winner Tommie Estes, Jr., out of turn four when the green flag fell, and led all five laps in the Vivarin Dash. Kinser burst into the lead from the pole in the Preliminary Feature, and entered lapped traffic three laps into the 20-lap race. He held off Estes through four restarts to claim the $4,000 first prize. Jeff Swindell brought out the red flag late in the fourth lap when the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim bicycled through turn four and flipped over the retaining wall. Insult was added to injury for the Two Winners Racing team seconds later. Greg Hodnett allowed the #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim to hit the restarting cone on the back straightaway and was sent to the rear of the field. The 1993 Skoal Outlaw Series Rookie of the Year roared back through the pack to finish in 10th place. Hodnett's brush with the cone nullified Danny Lasoski's move into second place on the restart. Another fourth-corner flip - the result of Terry McCarl's collision with Andy Hillenburg - stopped the race late in the fifth lap. While McCarl managed to keep the #24 Maxim inside the retaining fence, he had to settle for a 22nd-place finish. Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Rickey Hood brought out the caution flag midway through the race when he stopped Joe Herrera's #45x Avenger in turn three. Hillenburg was involved in another collision a lap after the race resumed as he drove his #2 STP J&J past Sammy Swindell. The fourth-corner collision sent Swindell's #1 Hooters Restaurants Gambler flipping into the front-straightaway wall, ending a rather forgettable night for the Swindell brothers. Kinser raced ahead of the field throughout the final nine laps, beating Estes under the checkered flag by four seconds. "What can you say, it's another Kinser out here," Estes said. "He's got Karl wrenching the car, too, so I'm glad to run second." Mark, a good friend of Estes', had nothing but praise for the competition and his crew. "Tommie is quite a competitor. I never considered it easy tonight. The track was demanding. "The crew did a great job. This the first time I've ever won three races in a row in my 10 years of racing with the World of Outlaws. I couldn't have done it without my crew. They did a great job. I'm really proud to be racing for my dad." Jac Haudenschild drove the #22 Pennzoil Maxim past Lasoski for third place midway through the race. "The Dude" held off Stevie Smith for the final automatic starting spot in Saturday's Snap-on Tools Dash. Rounding out the top 10 were Hillenburg, Johnny Herrera, Aaron Berryhill, Randy Hannagan and Hodnett. Hillenburg, the defending Spring Nationals champion, raced past nine sprinters from his eighth-row starting position to finish in sixth place.
