World of Outlaws Mean 15 Drivers Seeking Bonus Bucks For Breaking U.S. 36 Raceway Record
Norman, OK -- May 3, 2006 -- The World of Outlaws slice and dice on some of the fastest racetracks from coast to coast. They lay down jaw-dropping, clock-stopping qualifying laps. One of these speed plants holds the distinction of having the only sub 10-second single-lap record on the circuit.
U.S. 36 Raceway in Osborn, Mo., is new to the World of Outlaws schedule this season, but it still sets the bar as far as quick times go. Terry McCarl, driver of the No. 24 Big Game Treestands Eagle, turned a heart-stopping lap of 9.96 seconds a couple of years ago at the high-banked, ultra-fast and wide 3/8-mile oval. The Mean 15 racers will have some added incentive to shatter the mark on Friday night.
Drivers usually don't need much enticing to go fast, but during the Missouri High-Banked Nationals Presented By Weld Wheels, one driver will pick up a bonus of at least $500, with a chance at $1,000.
Longtime sprint car supporters Bruce and Debi Cox of Cox Design and Metal Fabrication in Altoona, Iowa, have upped the ante. They are offering the fastest qualifier a bonus of $500 and if that driver breaks McCarl's current mark, he or she will pocket another $500. McCarl currently leads the World of Outlaws with three quick-times this season with points leader Donny Schatz in second with two quick-times.
Even though McCarl currently holds the U.S. 36 Raceway track record, he's also in the running for the cash.
"With the World of Outlaws, everyone is always trying to win whether it is time trials or the feature," said McCarl, also from Altoona.
The biggest event of the year and the track's season-opener, U.S. 36 Raceway is ready for the best and fastest sprint-car drivers in the world. Also expect some of the tough weekly competitors in the Missouri, Iowa and Illinois area to also take a stab at the track record.
"The track looks really good," McCarl said. "They were hoping to get one week in of regular racing but that was rained out. They did have a local practice and their local hot shoe, Jim Cameron, turned a lap of 10.3 seconds with very used tires on."
While McCarl would like to see his track record stay, he knows every driver who signs in will be gunning for it -- including himself.
"I think that there is a very good chance of breaking it," McCarl said. "It has been a few years since I set it. Motors are better and I did not turn a perfect lap. I predict a new record."
Advance tickets for the event are available by calling SLS Promotion between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. at 815-344-2023 or by stopping by in person at nearby St. Joe Harley-Davidson.
McCarl will be at St. Joe Harley-Davidson on Thursday. On Friday fans can be part of the Harley Ride to the track that leaves from St. Joe Harley-Davidson on race day. U.S. 36 Raceway is just a few short miles west of I-35 on U.S. 36 in Osborn, Mo.
