Schatz Wins Western World Preliminary By Richard Day PHOENIX, AZ (October 22) - Donny Schatz won an "A" Feature in each of his first two full seasons with the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series. Before the series opened the 32nd Annual Western World Championships Friday at Manzanita Speedway, he had never won a Preliminary Feature, however. "My guys have worked so hard this season," the series' 1997 Rookie of the Year said. "We were fast early, then it seemed like we struggled there in the middle of the year. Hopefully, we have the Parker Stores car back on track." Schatz won the Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race, then earned the right to start the feature outside the front row by following Andy Hillenburg across the finish line in the Channellock Dash. Donny drove the #15 Parker Stores Maxim past Hillenburg deep in the second corner early in the opening lap and held off Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser for the flag-to-flag victory. "That first lap with Andy was pretty exciting," Donny said. "It got really close there, but he raced us clean, and we were able to come away with a win. We don't use radios any more, so I didn't know how close Mark was there at the end. He's got a championship to win, but we had a race to win tonight, so I wasn't too worried about it. You know the 5M is going to be fast every night." Kinser's runner-up run, coupled with Danny Lasoski's eighth-place finish, gave Mark a 55-point advantage heading into Saturday's feature program. Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year candidate Tim Shaffer bumped the outside retaining wall as the green flag fell in the feature. Shaffer kept the #11H Vivarin Maxim from crashing, but "B" Feature winner Daryn Pittman's collision with Randy Hannagan sent the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim flipping down the front straightaway. Although Pittman was uninjured in the crash, the #47 was unable to restart. Shaffer and Terry McCarl pitted during the red period. Hillenburg burst into the lead as the green flag replaced the red, only to have Schatz pass him in turn two and beat him down the back stretch. Kinser caught Hillenburg five laps later, but was unable to drove the #5M Mopar Maxim into second place. Sammy Swindell passed Stevie Smith for sixth place, while Lasoski took ninth from Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner P.J. Chesson during the eighth lap. Schatz was 1.2 seconds ahead of Hillenburg when he entered lapped traffic midway through the 20-lap race. Kinser, who won the February 27th race at Manzanita Speedway, used an inside move in the fourth corner to pass Hillenburg for second place late in lap 15. Second NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Johnny Herrera used an similar move to take third from Hillenburg the next time around. Steve Kinser, winner of seven Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series main events at Manzanita, earned the final automatic qualifying position in Saturday's Channellock Dash by passing Hillenburg in the low groove between turns one and two with 3 2/3 laps remaining. Schatz increased his advantage while Herrera battled Mark Kinser for the runner-up spot, and took the checkered flag with 1.4 seconds to spare. "I really can't believe how we ended up tonight," Schatz said. "We lost the left rear shock on the first caution, and it made it a handful out there. But the car was just so fast, I knew it was going to be tough for anyone to get around us." Smith finished in fifth place, ahead of Swindell, Hillenburg, Lasoski, Greg Hodnett and Joey Saldana and 18th-starting Jeff Shepard. Mark Kinser received his 30th Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the year for pacing the 44-car qualifying session with a 15.359-second, 117.195-m.p.h., lap around the semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. Hodnett made his debut in Guy Forbrook's #5 Wirtgen Maxim while Hannagan drove Junior Holbrook's #8H Energy Release Maxim for the first time. Hannagan finished 15th in the Preliminary Feature. WoO
