Kinser Stops Walker's Streak in Manzanita Finale By Richard Day PHOENIX, AZ (February 27) - Mark Kinser, whose seven-feature winning streak at Perris Auto Speedway ended a week ago, kept Tyler Walker from extending his streak at Manzanita Speedway Saturday with his first victory of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 1999 season. "It's great to get the Mopar car into victory lane for the first time," the 1997 Western World champion said. "This is probably our only shot at a Fortune 500 company, and the expectations are pretty high. "We've seen how strong these motors are on the dyno, so we know the car is fast enough to win. My dad (Karl Kinser) and the crew worked their tails off this winter, and it's up to me to make their work pay off. We started pretty rough this year, but we got two seconds and now a win, so I think we're going to be in pretty good shape." Kinser, who followed Walker across the finish line in Friday's Preliminary Feature, put himself in good shape Saturday by winning the Channellock Dash. He started the "A" Feature on the pole and completed the 30 laps in the caution-free race in a record time of 9:18.68. Kinser and Walker raced wheel-to-wheel down the front straightaway as the green flag waved, and Mark edged ahead in the first corner. He had the #5M Mopar Maxim a half-straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers when he entered lapped traffic six laps into the race. Walker was trying to pass Kinser for the lead in dense traffic the next time around when his #35 Air Sep Maxim clipped the wall high in turn two, allowing Steve Kinser to drive his #11 Quaker State Maxim into second place. Walker regained the runner-up spot three laps later, passing "The King of the Outlaws" with a low move between the first and second corners. Steve used a similar move in the same spot to regain second place the next time around. A full straightaway separated the Kinser cousins midway through the race. Sammy Swindell, winner of two Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Features at Manzanita in his career, started inside the fifth row. He passed Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Craig Dollansky for fifth with a low move through turns three and four late in the 16th lap. Swindell continued his run toward the front during the next two laps, steering his #1 Channellock Stealth deep in the second corner to pass series points leader Danny Lasoski then taking the low line through turn four to pass Walker for third. Walker stayed in the high groove and regained third place with a fourth-corner pass of the three-time Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion late in lap 19. Mark was half-a-lap ahead of Steve while Swindell battled Walker for third place with seven laps remaining. After a failed attempt to pass Walker deep in turn two early in the 27th lap, Swindell came back with a low move through the fourth corner to claim third place 2 1/2 laps later. Steve was racing into turn three when Mark took the checkered flag. The 101st victory of Mark's Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series career pushed him into fourth place in the point standings. Following the Kinser cousins across the finish line were Swindell, Walker, Lasoski, 13th-starting Johnny Herrera, Dollansky, Jeff Swindell, Daryn Pittman and Fourth NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Stevie Smith. Andy Hillenburg, the 22nd-fastest qualifier in the 38-car field, drove his #2 Luxaire J&J into 13th place from outside the 12th row. Dollansky received the first Vivarin Fast-Time Award of his career for pacing the qualifying session with a 15.952-second, 112.839- m.p.h., lap around Phoenix' legendary semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. The next stop for the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series is a double-feature event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Friday and Saturday. TNN Motorsports will televise Saturday's feature racing program live, beginning at 10 p.m. eastern time. WoO
