Sammy Swindell Takes Manzanita Opener By Richard Day PHOENIX, AZ (January 30) - Opening night of Manzanita Speedway's "A.J. Foyt Mopar Cavalcade of Sprints" was packed with irony. Sammy Swindell drove his #1 Channellock Gambler to a flag-to- flag victory in the inaugural Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series race. Jac Haudenschild, driver of the #22 Pennzoil Maxim, set Manzanita's new one-lap record with a 15.340-second (117.340 m.p.h.) qualifying run and received the first Channellock Fast- Time Award. Haudenschild then picked the #0 inversion pill, which meant the fastest qualifier would start on the pole in the Vivarin Dash. "The Wild Child" and 14-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser, who qualified for the feature race in every event they entered last season, had problems in their heat races, however, and were forced to qualify for the evening's main event in the "B" Feature. Haudenschild and "The King of the Outlaws" finished first and second in the "B" Feature, respectively. While Haudenschild and Kinser finished sixth in their heat races, Swindell's third-fastest qualifying time and second-place in the third heat race put him on the pole in the Vivarin Dash. Sammy, the World of Outlaws' champion in 1981 and 1982, led all five laps in the Vivarin Dash for the right to start the 20-lap preliminary feature on the pole. Swindell burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the evening's main event. While he raced away from the field, the World of Outlaws' last two champions - Mark Kinser and Dave Blaney - battled for the runner-up spot. "The Buckeye Bullet" drove his #10 Vivarin J&J past Mark on the front straightaway at the end of the first lap, and followed Swindell into lapped traffic three laps later. They were racing wheel-to-wheel when Troy Rutherford crashed into the retaining wall in turn four late in the seventh lap. Two lapped cars restarting between Sammy and Blaney allowed Swindell to open a comfortable advantage within a lap after the race resumed. Joe Gaerte surrendered seventh place when he allowed his new-look #3G Stealth to spin in the first corner early in lap 11. Another two-lapped-car-cushion and Mark's pressure on Blaney for the runner-up spot allowed Swindell to race away from the field during the ensuing restart. Kinser steered the #5M Wirtgen deep into turn four to pass "The Buckeye Bullet" within a lap after the race resumed, but was four car-lengths behind Sammy when he took the checkered flag. Blaney's engine exploded within seconds after the checkered flag fell. Mark's cousin, Steve, and Sammy's brother, Jeff, also waged a race-long battle for fourth place. Following Kinser and Jeff across the finish line were Haudenschild, Paul McMahan, First Heat Race winner Steve Kent, Randy Hannagan and Donny Schatz. An engine problem caused Andy Hillenburg to surrender eighth place. He steered his #2 STP J&J into the infield as the leaders took the white flag and was credited with a 16th-place finish. Greg Hodnett, unable to take any qualifying laps due to a mechanical malfunction, raced from the back of pack in the Fourth Heat Race to gain a spot in the Preliminary Feature. Then he drove the #11H Selma Shell Gambler past 13 cars to finish 11th in the evening's main event. Tyler Walker, another driver forced to watch the qualifying session, raced past five cars to win the "C" Feature. Johnny Herrera, the sixth-fastest qualifier, suffered two blown engines, the second of which cost him the lead in the "B" Feature. Joey Saldana and the #75 Mopar Stealth flipped in turn one during the hot lap session, putting them out of action for the remainder of the program. WoO 1997 Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series The A.J.
