Kinser Puts Together Perfect Performance at Magic City By Richard Day BILLINGS, MT (August 22) - Steve Kinser has never been one to rest on his laurels. After claiming $100,000 victories on successive weekends, there was still plenty of magic left in his #11 Quaker State Maxim. He proved that Tuesday with a flawless performance in the World of Outlaws' Second Annual Wild Wild Northwest Tour opener at Magic City Speedway. "The King of the Outlaws" earned his eighth EcoWater Fast-Time Award of the year, then won the First Snap-on Tools Heat Race and the Vivarin Dash before leading all 35 laps in the "A" Feature. After going 17 years without a clean sweep, the Skoal Outlaw Series has experienced two in the last three events. Sammy Swindell dominated Bridgeport Speedway in similar fashion on August 7th. The only difference between the two was that Swindell set the one-lap record in qualifying but did not lead every lap in the main event. All was not well for Kinser when he first put the #11 on the track, however. His engine didn't sound right, so crew chief Scott Gerken replaced the power plant before hot laps. Kinser, .070 seconds faster than Andy Hillenburg in time trials, put himself on the pole in the Vivarin Dash by picking the #0 inversion pill. Hillenburg, the Second Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner, joined "The King of the Outlaws" on the front row of the feature after finishing second in the seven-lap dash. Kinser burst into the lead in the main event, but was challenged in the second corner by hard-charging Jac Haudenschild who raced past Hillenburg in turn one. Hillenburg regained the runner-up spot two laps later, and followed Kinser into lapped traffic the next time around. Kinser didn't race among the backmarkers long, as Keith Kauffman stopped the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim on the front straightaway with a flat left front tire late in the fourth lap. Hillenburg pressured Kinser for the lead for two laps after the race resumed, then chased him into lapped traffic during lap eight. He continued to battle "The King" as Dave Blaney and "The Wild Child" exchanged third place for the next four laps. Kinser cleared the backmarkers midway through the race, and opened a full-straightaway advantage by lap 19. He was approaching more lapped traffic two laps later when Hillenburg and Mike Quigley tangled in turn three. With several backmarkers restarting between him and Haudenschild and Blaney threatening to take over the runner-up spot, Kinser quickly returned to his half-straightaway comfort zone. "The King of the Outlaws" passed Hillenburg with 10 laps remaining. He was taken out of lapped traffic two laps later as Andy spun in his attempt to pass Kinser and get back on the lead lap. Stevie Smith was in fifth place when he stopped the #71M EcoWater Maxim on the back straightaway with a blown engine with seven laps remaining. Kinser opened a full-straightaway advantage within two laps after the green flag replaced the yellow, and caught the backmarkers again with three laps remaining. Haudenschild was maneuvering the #22 Pennzoil Maxim into position to take the lead early in the white-flag lap when he slid over the cushion and stopped in turn one. As the caution flag fell, several cars quickly slowed in front of Greg Hodnett. Unable to find an escape route, Hodnett and the #8TW Kele & Associates Maxim flipped over the back-straightaway guard rail. With Mike Wasina, Sr., and Steve Celar restarting between the leaders, Kinser quickly opened a comfortable margin. He took the checkered flag as Blaney entered turn three. "Every time I got into traffic, somebody spun out," Kinser admitted in victory lane." Californian Paul McMahan finished the main event in third place, ahead of Jeff Swindell, Third Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Danny Lasoski, Randy Hannagan, Joe Gaerte, Haudenschild, Hillenburg and Kauffman. After fuel pump problems kept Swindell out of the qualifying session, he ranked 35th in time trials for the second straight event. He redeemed himself in the feature, however, just as he did at the Amoco Knoxville Nationals. Jeff received his 10th Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award for driving the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim past 20 sprinters from the 24th starting position. The fourth-place finish pushed Swindell past Danny Lasoski and into third place in the point standings.
