'The King' Dominates Pennzoil Night at Lernerville By Richard Day SARVER, PA (May 25) - Several weeks ago, Steve Kinser finished 11th and 12th in successive Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Features and responded with two straight victories. After his "disappointing" seventh-place finish in the Schick Protector Razor Winged Thunder event Saturday, "The King of the Outlaws" roared back with a dominating victory Tuesday when the series opened its annual Pennsylvania tour on Purvis Brothers/Pennzoil Night at Lernerville Speedway. "We were awful at Terre Haute last weekend," Steve told the sellout crowd at Lernerville. "Scott (Gerken) got the motors on the dyno at the shop and tuned and tuned, and the Quaker State Maxim felt pretty good tonight. This is a good way to start this eastern swing." Kinser, who started outside the front row, led all 35 laps to claim the $10,000 first prize. The victory was his fourth in a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series main event this year and the 13th of his career at Lernerville Speedway. Tyler Walker opened the festivities by slicing .107 seconds off the qualifying standard Mark Kinser set on July 30, 1996. Walker drove his family's #35 Air Sep Maxim around the semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval in 12.768 seconds, an average speed of 140.977 m.p.h., and was rewarded with his second Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season. Kinser, the third-fastest qualifier, finished second in both the Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race and the Channellock Dash. He steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim around polesitter Jeff Shepard in turn four as the green flag fell to take the lead in the "A" Feature. Sammy Swindell passed both Shepard and Stevie Smith as Kinser raced ahead of the field. Smith drove his #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit past Swindell in the low groove between the first and second corners, only to have Sammy get back by him in turn three. Mark Kinser exchanged third place with Smith during the second and third laps before Andy Hillenburg's collision with Frankie Kerr sent his #2 Luxaire J&J spinning in the third corner late in lap four. Mark, who started inside the third row, continued his run toward the front as the green flag replaced the yellow, steering the #5M Mopar Maxim deep in the first corner to pass Swindell for second. The Kinser cousins were approaching lapped traffic when Daryn Pittman took the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim for a spin in turn two early in the sixth lap. Smith executed an inside move in the third corner to pass Swindell for third place as the race resumed. "The King of the Outlaws" was 15 car-lengths ahead of Mark when he entered lapped traffic during the 11th lap. The caution flag flew again for Hillenburg, who spun in turn four, the next time around. A mechanical malfunction that forced Hillenburg to stop on the front straightaway a little more than a lap after the race resumed kept him from restarting the race. Mark kept pace with his cousin as the green flag replaced the yellow. He tried to take the lead with inside moves in the first and second corners and turns three and four, but couldn't surge ahead. Donny Schatz steadily made his way toward the front during the first 10 laps before driving the #15 Parker Stores Maxim into the low groove in the first corner to pass Smith for third early in lap 14. Jac Haudenschild, who started outside the eighth row, raced past 10 cars during the first 15 laps. An inside move in turn two allowed him to pass Swindell for fifth place two laps later. Steve returned to his 15-car-length comfort zone before catching the backmarkers again during the 19th lap. Mark narrowed the gap to four car-lengths in dense traffic by lap 26, however. The Kinser cousins, Schatz and Haudenschild raced nose-to-tail throughout the 33rd lap, but Steve pulled away during the final two laps and took the checkered flag with 1.280 seconds to spare. "You never know what you want in this kind of racing," Steve said. "We tried running the top and the bottom in (turns) one and two. We were pretty good in three and four, but I wasn't sure what to think about the other end. It seemed like we got a good run off the top in one and two, but it really hung on the back stretch." Schatz held off Haudenschild for third place. Smith finished fifth, ahead of Walker, Swindell, Danny Lasoski and Greg Hodnett. Twenty of the 26 cars starting the feature finished on the lead lap. Lance Blevins, who replaced Jimmy Carr in his family's #21 PC Joey J&J following the Terre Haute event, performed remarkably well in his 1999 debut. Lance, the 14th-fastest qualifier in the 45 car field, won the Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race, finished eighth in the Channellock Dash and 10th in the "A" Feature.
