Swindell Drives Silver Car to Victory at Lernerville By Richard Day SARVER, PA (May 20) - Channellock rolled out a shiny new silver car to celebrate Sammy Swindell's 25 years in racing on Purvis Brothers/Pennzoil Night at Lernerville Speedway Tuesday. The celebration continued on into the night as Swindell earned the Channellock Fast-Time Award and led the final 12 laps to claim his seventh "A" Feature victory of the year and regain the lead in the World of Outlaws point standings. "I think we had 11 wins (at Lernerville), and this will make 12," Sammy said as Channellock President and CEO Bill DeArment joined him in victory lane. "I just hope we don't get stuck there. "This is a really good track. It has a couple of good lines on it. We've always run well here. It's pretty consistent here. They do a good job, so we know what to expect and we have a basic setup to go with. It's a fun place to race." Swindell, who started inside the second row, exchanged third place with Dave Blaney during the opening lap as fellow Tennessean Greg Hodnett burst into the lead from outside the front row. Sammy passed Vivarin Dash winner Jac Haudenschild with a low move through the first and second corners to take over the runner-up spot early in lap four. Defending Lernerville Silver Cup champion Mark Kinser drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim into fifth place from outside the fourth row during the first four laps and followed the leaders into lapped traffic the next time around. Hodnett was equal to Swindell's challenges during the sixth lap. Sammy steered his #1 Channellock Gambler into the inside groove on the front straightaway, then tried to take the lead in turns three and four, only to be turned away. After Lance Blevins brought out the caution flag with a first-corner spin early in lap seven, Hodnett kept the #11H Selma Shell Maxim ahead of the two-time World of Outlaws champion on the ensuing restart. Hodnett opened a three-car-length advantage during the eighth lap as Blaney and Haudenschild exchanged third place. Kinser caught them five laps later, and passed "The Buckeye Bullet" for fourth with a low move through turn four. Swindell caught the 1993 Rookie of the Year again early in lap 14. They raced wheel-to-wheel down the back straightaway, and Hodnett maintained the lead by surging ahead in the third corner. Hodnett, Swindell, Haudenschild, Mark and Blaney were running nose-to-tail when Paul McMahan took the #75 Mopar Stealth for a spin in turn one early in the 16th lap. As the green flag replaced the yellow, Blaney steered the #10 Vivarin J&J high in the fourth corner to pass Kinser for fourth place. He took over third place with a low move in turn one the next time around, only to have "The Wild Child" return the favor on the back straightaway seconds later. The battle for the lead continued to rage as Kinser took the low line through the first and second corners to pass Blaney for third early in lap 22. Swindell took the lead with a low move in the second corner two laps later, and immediately started building a comfortable advantage as Kinser challenged Hodnett for the runner-up spot. Mark passed Hodnett early in lap 27, and Haudenschild relegated him to fourth place with six laps remaining. Sammy opened a half-straightaway advantage as Second Heat Race winner Steve Kinser blew into sixth place during the 31st lap. Swindell took the checkered flag as Mark raced through turn three. The $10,000 victory came exactly five years to the day after he last won at Lernerville. "Our car was a little tight at the start of the race," Sammy told the standing-room-only crowd from victory lane. "Greg's car was really good, so I just tried to stay with him early. I thought out car would get better, and I figured he would get a little loose. I just had to wait until he got into traffic, but the first few times we did, I just seemed to catch the cars wrong. "Greg ran a good race, but the Channellock car was just right at the right time. We played with the car all night, and tried to put things together for the "A" main. My crew did a good job." Following Swindell and Kinser across the finish line were Haudenschild, Hodnett, Blaney, Steve Kinser, Danny Lasoski, Andy Hillenburg, 15th-starting Keith Kauffman and Stevie Smith. Paul McMahan's 17th-place finish pushed him four points ahead of Donny Schatz in their battle for the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Rookie of the Year award.
