Swindell Dominates Lebanon Valley Feature By Richard Day WEST LEBANON, NY (June 2) - What a difference a year can make. Last August, when Sammy Swindell won the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature at Lebanon Valley Speedway, it was his eighth victory of the year. When Sammy won his eighth "A" Feature of the 1997 season - Tuesday at Lebanon Valley - he put himself two months ahead of last year's pace and increased his lead in the point standings to 35 points. Swindell, the only leader in last year's main event at Lebanon Valley, led all 25 laps in Tuesday's caution-free feature as well. The $10,000 victory was the third of Sammy's career at the high-banked, 1/2-mile oval. After recording the fifth-fastest qualifying lap in the 32- car field, Sammy earned the right to start the main event on the pole by winning the Vivarin Dash. Swindell drove his #1 Channellock Gambler into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature. Mark Kinser, the Channellock Fast-Time Award winner, passed Dave Blaney for third place with a low move through the first and second corners early in lap two. Mark, who won a World of Outlaws "A" Feature at Lebanon Valley in 1994, challenged cousin Steve Kinser for the runner-up spot as the leaders entered lapped traffic six laps into the race. He made several more runs at "The King of the Outlaws" before steering the #5M Wirtgen Maxim to the lowest point in turn one to take over second place early in the 10th lap. Blaney and Andy Hillenburg exchanged fourth place midway through the race. Hillenburg won a back-straightaway drag with "The Buckeye Bullet," only to have Blaney drive his #10 Vivarin J&J back by him high in the fourth corner late in lap 12. Swindell opened a half-straightaway lead during the 14th lap, but Mark narrowed the gap in dense lapped traffic the next time around. Kinser threatened to take over first place for three laps before Sammy cleared the backmarkers and increased his advantage to a full straightaway. Swindell survived a close call as he headed toward the white flag late in the 24th lap. He was behind "B" Feature winner Randy Hannagan when the #83 Beef Packers Stealth hit the outside retaining wall in turn four. Sammy dodged the 1995 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year and raced down the front straightaway as Hannagan headed into the pits. Sammy took the checkered flag as Mark Kinser raced through turn four. "Traffic makes a big difference here," Swindell said in victory lane, "but I seemed to catch the cars just right. My crew told me I had a good lead, so I tried to be careful. "There at the end, I was following the #83 when he got into the wall. He about put me up there, too, but we kept her going. "We were a little concerned about tires, but the Channellock Gambler ran good tonight. I just hope we can keep it going for the rest of the (New York) swing." Blaney finished the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 25th "A" Feature of the year in third place, ahead of Hillenburg, Steve Kinser, Second Heat Race winner Stevie Smith, Jac Haudenschild, Billy Pauch, Greg Hodnett and Johnny Herrera. Rookie of the Year candidate Paul McMahan endured another roller-coaster night in New York. He allowed the #75 Mopar Stealth to hit the wall during his first qualifying run, and his one lap at the end was only the 22nd-fastest in the field. He came back strong in the main event, however, racing into 17th place from outside the 11th row. The World of Outlaws will take Steve Kinser's birthday off before running the final two legs of its annual tour of New York Wednesday at Rolling Wheels Raceway and Thursday at Canandaigua Speedway.
