Danny Lasoski to Drive Beef Packers Sprinter By Richard Day FRESNO, CA (December 1) - Seven-time Knoxville Raceway champion Danny Lasoski has joined Dennis Roth's Beef Packers team to race with the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series. "We're glad to have Danny race for us," Roth said Monday. "We'd like to run in the top five with the World of Outlaws next year. I don't think that's setting our expectations too high. "We're just putting a team together to go out there for a couple of years and see how we can do." Mark Ellis and 1991 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year Jimmy Carr will be the team's mechanics. The #83 will be an Eagle Chassis powered by a Wesphal engine. Lasoski opened the 1997 season in Jim Wahlie's #1W Conn West Freight Systems Maxim, then drove several other cars, including the Beef Packers sprinter during the second half of the year. Although he didn't compete in all the races, "The Dude" finished 15th in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series point standings. He recorded 36 top-10 finishes - nine in the top five - including a third-place run at the Amoco Knoxville Nationals and a 10th in the Gold Cup Race of Champions. Paul McMahan, the 1997 World of Outlaws Rookie of the Year runner-up, was Roth's driver when the 1997 season opened. In other World of Outlaws news, defending series champion Sammy Swindell has announced his #1 Channellock sprinter will be a Stealth in 1998. Gary Stanton is interviewing drivers and crew chiefs after parting company with McMahan and mechanic Scott Benic. McMahan and Benic are also looking to join new teams. Despite rumors to the contrary, Kenny Woodruff will remain the crew chief of the Blaney/Hylton team next season. Dale Blaney will drive the #93 Amoco Ultimate J&J in 1998 while brother and team co-owner Dave races with NASCAR's Busch Grand National series. WoO
