'The King" Survives Hot One at LaSalle By Richard Day LASALLE, IL (July 19) - Hot, humid weather at LaSalle Speedway Monday made defending Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series champion Steve Kinser realize he needs to be in better condition if he expects to continue racing much longer. "The King of the Outlaws" survived the intense heat, however, and drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim to a flag-to-flag victory. "It's pretty tough on a fat guy like me," Steve said of the hot weather. "If I take care of myself a little better during the winter, I can do this for quite a while longer. If I let it go like I have the past couple of years, I won't be able to do this too much longer. I still like winning races." The $8,000 victory was Kinser's ninth of the season. He won only six while claiming his 15th series championship in 1998, so fat ladies aren't lining up to sing his swan song yet. Kinser, the 11th-fastest qualifier in the 34-car field, won the Third NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race and earned the right to start the 30- lap "A" Feature on the front row by racing into second place from outside the second row in the Channellock Dash. Dale Blaney, making his debut in Junior Holbrook's #8H Energy Release Eagle, won his first Channellock Dash of the season. Kinser raced around the series' 1998 Rookie of the Year in the fourth corner to take the lead as the green flag fell in the main event, however. Sammy Swindell and Tyler Walker exchanged third place before a mechanical malfunction forced Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Mark Kinser to slow in turn four late in the second lap. Stevie Smith was unable to dodge the #5M Mopar Maxim, and they collided. As the race resumed, Donny Schatz hit the retaining wall in the first corner and flipped, bringing out the red flag. Blaney challenged Kinser with an inside move in turn three as the green flag replaced the red, but was unable to regain the lead. "The King" was building a comfortable advantage when the caution flag fell late in lap five when Kevin Gobrecht spun in the fourth corner. Kinser controlled the ensuing restart, and was eight car-lengths ahead of Blaney when he entered lapped traffic during the 10th lap. Mark Kinser was racing back through the field when he turned a 360, allowing cousin Steve to pass him. "The King of the Outlaws" maintained an eight car-length advantage during the race's middle stages. Walker and Swindell exchanged third place three times during the next five laps. Andy Hillenburg, who started outside the ninth row, drove his #2 Luxaire J&J past 12 cars during the first half of the race. His daring move between Swindell and Brooke Tatnell on the front straightaway early in the 20th lap put him in fourth place. Hillenburg used an inside move in the first corner to pass Walker for third. After a mechanical problem forced Gary Wright to stop in turn four, Walker passed Andy low in turn two as the green flag replaced the yellow. Hillenburg regained third place by taking the inside line through the third and fourth corners late in lap 25. Kinser was eight car-lengths ahead of Blaney when he caught the backmarkers again during the final lap. He was six car-lengths ahead when he took the checkered flag for the second victory of his career at LaSalle Speedway. "The Quaker state car was running well tonight," Steve said. "We tried a couple of different lines out there. It seemed like when we could get a good run off the bottom. We were too slow getting in through the middle, so I just moved up to a little above half-way and ran pretty well there. I saw on that last caution that Andy was up there. He was pitted pretty close to me, so I knew what he had done to his car. That might be something I need to do on the slick tracks." Hillenburg finished in third place, ahead of Walker, Swindell, Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Danny Lasoski, Johnny Herrera, First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Lance Blevins, Tim Shaffer and Gobrecht, who started inside the 12th row. Lasoski received his ninth Vivarin Fast-Time Award of the season for pacing the qualifying session with an 11.182-second lap around the high-banked, 1/4-mile oval. Jeff Swindell drove the #104+ Octane Boost J&J past 12 sprinters to finish in 12th place. WoO
