Schatz Wins Season-Ending Wirtgen Event By Richard Day LAS VEGAS, NV (November 3) - While Mark Kinser and Danny Lasoski battled through the season finale for the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series championship, Donny Schatz had an agenda of his own. Schatz joined the series' elite by winning two of the last three events, including the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Presented by Wirtgen Wednesday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. "We've come on really strong at the end of season," Donny said. "I wanted to win the last two nights, but we got it tonight." Schatz, the runner-up in Monday's opening-night preliminary feature, started outside the front row next to Tuesday's feature winner, Sammy Swindell. He steered his family's #15 ParkerStores Maxim around the series' three-time champion as the green flag fell and led all 30 laps for the $18,000 victory. TNN Motorsports televised the action live. Kinser, who admitted 1999 was the most miserable of his career because he put too much pressure on himself, battled mechanical problems throughout the program. He dropped out during lap 16 and finished in 21st place, but still won his second championship in four years. Lasoski, who coasted into the infield with a severe drive line vibration, finished 26th. "I'm really happy for Mopar," said Mark, who outscored "The Dude" by 71 points in the second-tightest title race in series history. Schatz, who finished seventh in the point standings, took control of the feature as the green flag fell. He opened a comfortable lead during the opening lap as Jeff Shepard passed Swindell for second. The series' 1997 Rookie of the Year lost his advantage early in the second lap when Brooke Tatnell stopped the #7K Kele & Associates Maxim in turn four with a flat left rear tire. Shepard kept pace with Schatz when the green flag replaced the yellow, He surged ahead with a low move in turn three, only to have Schatz pass him high in the fourth corner. Donny raced away, opening a 10 car-length advantage within 1 1/2 laps. Schatz entered lapped traffic two laps later, but Lasoski opened the track ahead of the leaders when he stopped in turn two with a flat left rear tire early in the sixth lap. Schatz controlled the restart and immediately started opening a comfortable advantage again. Lasoski's season ended when he coasted into the infield four laps later. Although two more cautions before the race's midpoint tightened the field, Schatz maintained the lead. Donny was three car-lengths ahead of Second NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Johnny Herrera when he caught the backmarkers again during the 20th lap. Schatz survived a scare the next time around, somehow keeping the #15 under control after hitting Daryn Pittman from behind on the back stretch. He increased his lead to a half-straightaway during lap 23. Tatnell tightened the field again by stopping on the back straightaway three laps later. Schatz raced away from the field on the restart and took the checkered flag with eight car-lengths to spare. "I knew our right rear wheel was packed with mud with five laps to go," Donny said. "It was win it or wear it and we won it. I'm just glad we made it all 30 laps." Herrera believed the difference between winning and finishing second came down to tire selection. "In long runs, our tires came in for us," Johnny said. "We went with harder tire than Donny. He just got off better on restarts." Shepard finished in third place, ahead of the Swindell brothers - Jeff and Sammy - First NAPA Auto Parts Heat Race winner Stevie Smith, 23rd-starting Kasey Kahne, Tim Shaffer, Steve Kinser and Randy Hannagan. Andy Hillenburg, who announced a multi-year contract extension with his major sponsor, Luxaire, was unable to start the "B" Feature. He took a provisional in the championship race, and passed nine cars to finish in 16th place.
