Haudenschild Extends Winning Streak at Knoxville By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (July 22) - Jac Haudenschild established himself as the favorite to win the 38th Annual Amoco Knoxville Nationals on McDonald's Night at Knoxville Raceway Wednesday by winning his fifth straight Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series feature race at the legendary half-mile oval. Haudenschild battled seven-time Knoxville Raceway champion Danny Lasoski throughout the 25-lap race before beating him under Doug Clark's checkered flag by inches to complete his sweep of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' pre-Nationals features. "I told Danny they should just pay us both for the win," Jac said after both stopped on the front straightaway and hugged. When asked about winning the Amoco Knoxville Nationals (August 12-15), Haudenschild said, "That's one we haven't managed to win yet, but maybe we can turn that around in a few weeks. "Jack Elden has given me a great car, and my guys have worked really hard the last few weeks." The victory was Haudenschild's third straight and his eighth of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 20th Anniversary Season. Haudenschild, the fourth-fastest qualifier in the 48-car field, earned the right to start the main event on the pole by winning his eighth Channellock Dash of the year. Jac burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature. Lasoski passed Andy Hillenburg in the fourth corner, then steered the #83 Beef Packers Eagle into the low groove in turn one to take second place from Sammy Swindell early in the opening lap. Skip Jackson and "B" Feature winner Don Droud, Jr., were battling for seventh place the next time around when they collided in turn two. Droud spun, while Tyler Walker and Second Racing Champions Heat Race winner Donny Schatz stopped to avoid the crash. Lasoski passed Haudenschild for the lead with a low move into the fourth corner as the green flag replaced the yellow. The #19 Ingersoll-Rand Black Bandit suffered a broken right rear coil-over shock when Stevie Smith hit the wall in turn two early in the fifth lap. Seconds later, Greg Hodnett collided with Smith and flipped as he slowed in the fourth corner. Steve Kinser, winner of 11 Amoco Knoxville Nationals titles, took the high line through turn one to pass Swindell for third as the race resumed. Haudenschild raced wheel-to-wheel with Lasoski later in the sixth lap, but was unable to surge ahead. Schatz took the #15 Parker Stores Gambler for a spin in the second corner early in the 10th lap. Hillenburg passed Swindell with a low move in turn four on the ensuing restart. "The Dude" opened a half-straightaway advantage within five laps after the race resumed. He was a full straightaway ahead of Haudenschild when he entered lapped traffic two laps later. Lasoski slowed behind a pack of backmarkers on the back stretch with 5 1/2 laps remaining, allowing Haudenschild to narrow the gap to eight car-lengths. Haudenschild raced around several lapped cars high in the third corner to catch "The Dude" as they headed for the checkered flag. With the crowd of 10,000 standing and cheering, the leaders raced through turn four side-by-side. Haudenschild gained some momentum and had the #22 Pennzoil Maxim just inches ahead of Lasoski at the finish line. "I think Danny might have been a little better than us," Jac said, "but those last couple of laps I found something on the top that nobody else knew about." Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series points leader Steve Kinser finished third, ahead of Swindell, Mark Kinser, Hillenburg, Joe Gaerte, Jeff Swindell, Jackson and Smith. Sammy's fourth-place run pushed him into a tie with Mark Kinser for second in the World of Outlaws point standings. Mark ended a roller-coaster night on a high note. He received his 11th Vivarin Fast-Time of the year after pacing the qualifying session with a 16.101-second, 111.794 m.p.h. lap. Mark was leading the First Racing Champions Heat Race, but an engine malfunction in the #5M Wirtgen Maxim forced him to coast across the finish line in fifth place. Problems persisted even after his crew changed the engine following the Channellock Dash, so they decided to use a backup car. Mark used a provisional to start the race, and passed 20 cars in the main event to finish fifth. Kinser's provisional allowed Johnny Herrera to start the "A" Feature. He raced into 13th place from outside the 12th row.
