'BUCKEYE BULLET' WINS SECOND ANNUAL STP CLASSIC By Richard Day SIOUX FALLS, SD (June 28) - Dave Blaney and Jac Haudenschild have made a habit of passing each other lately - in the Skoal Outlaw Series point standings and on the track. They replaced each other for the lead in the points race three times in three events before Haudenschild regained first place at Knoxville Raceway on June 24th. Just when it appeared "The Wild Child" might put more distance between himself and the rest of the World of Outlaws' front-runners, Blaney passed him Wednesday to win the Second Annual STP Classic before a record crowd at Huset's Speedway. Unfortunately for "The Buckeye Bullet," his fifth victory of the year cut only two points off Haudenschild's lead. By leading the first 22 laps, an extra four points was added to the 144 "The Wild Child" received for finishing third. Winners of World of Outlaws "A" Features are awarded 150 points. Haudenschild, the second-fastest qualifier in the 34-car field, earned the right to start the 30-lap main event on the pole by winning the Vivarin Dash. He fell behind outside polesitter Stevie Smith as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature. The start was called back, however, when Donny Schatz went for a spin in turn four late in the opening lap. The second start featured a Haudenschild-Smith drag race down the front straightaway and into the second corner. "The Wild Child" surged ahead as they reached the back straightaway. Blaney stayed within striking distance, and passed Smith for the runner-up spot deep in turn four. After a second-lap caution involving Fourth Snap-on Tools Heat Race winner Dave Ekern and Steve Ballenger, "The Buckeye Bullet" caught Haudenschild in the fourth corner and they raced side-by-side before "The Wild Child" surged ahead in turn two. Blaney steered the #10 Vivarin J&J into the high groove as the leaders entered lapped traffic four laps later, but Haudenschild kept the #22 Pennzoil Maxim in front. Dave was still battling "The Wild Child" early in the 10th lap when defending STP Classic champion Mark Kinser bounced off the front-straightaway retaining wall, allowing Jeff Swindell to pass him for fourth place. "The Buckeye Bullet" made two more runs at Haudenschild during the 12th and 14th laps, while Smith and Swindell battled for third place close behind. A four-car race for the lead developed between the 16th and 22nd laps, as no more than three car-lengths separated Haudenschild, Blaney, Smith and Swindell. "The Wild Child" was lapping Ballenger with 7 1/4 laps remaining when Blaney passed them both with a low move into the fourth corner. Schatz hit the wall on the front straightaway the next time around, and knocked Smith out of third place when they collided. Swindell steered the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim deep into the third corner to pass Haudenschild for the runner-up spot as the race resumed. "The Buckeye Bullet" was 10 car-lengths ahead of his closest pursuers when he caught the backmarkers again with two laps remaining. Swindell was eight car-lengths behind when Blaney took the checkered flag. "The crew gave me a nice car tonight," Blaney said in victory lane. "I wasn't sure I'd be able to get by Jac. He wasn't making any mistakes. I just got a break in traffic." Haudenschild finished in third place for the third straight event. Rounding out the top 10 in the "A" Feature were Danny Lasoski, Kinser, Andy Hillenburg, Johnny Herrera, Joe Gaerte, Chad Mellenberndt and 14th-starting Greg Hodnett. Herrera received the Wells Lamont Hard Charger Award for racing into seventh place from his eighth-row starting position. Steve Kinser, a four-time winner at Huset's, earned his fourth Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year by pacing the qualifying session with an 11.146-second lap. He was running second in the First Snap-on Tools Heat Race when he hit the wall in turn four. The collision sent the #11 Quaker State Maxim flipping. Kinser's crew was unable to repair the car in time for him to start the "B" Feature, so he failed to qualify for a World of Outlaws main event for the first time in almost two years. The last "A" Feature he missed was the championship race at the 1993 Gold Cup Race of Champions. TNN: The Nashville Network is televising the Amoco Knoxville Nationals "Live in '95."
