KINSER GETS BACK ON WINNING TRACK AT KNOXVILLE By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (July 20) - Winning races at Knoxville Raceway has cured several of Steve Kinser's ailments over the years. The same can be said for five-time track champion Danny Lasoski. Kinser was still smarting from his 20th-place finish in Sunday's "A" Feature at Tri-State Speedway when he took the green flag at Knoxville Wednesday. "The Dude" was still recuperating from the major abdominal surgery he underwent less than two weeks ago. Neither was thinking about previous afflictions - or even their 1-2 finish in the 1992 Knoxville Nationals - when they lined up on the front row in the World of Outlaws' main event Wednesday. Lasoski burst into the lead early, fell behind during the opening lap and battled "The King of the Outlaws" until his engine exploded with the white flag flying. "I just tried to run good laps in the low groove," Kinser said following the 26th victory of his career at Knoxville. "I didn't know Danny was out there (in the high groove), but I knew I couldn't make any mistakes or he would pass me." Kinser drove the #11 Valvoline Maxim around "The Dude" high in the second corner to take the lead early in the first lap. He opened a 10-car- length advantage within two laps, and caught the backmarkers with a half- straightaway lead six laps into the race. Brent Antill brought out the caution flag twice during the first nine laps, and Terry McCarl stopped Guy Forbrook's #5 C&S Enterprises American Challenger in turn four with 10 laps remaining. Debris on the racing surface - the nose wing from the #12x Beaver Drill & Tool Gambler driven by Stevie Smith - set up a seven-lap dash to the checkered flag. When the race resumed, Kinser stayed in the low groove while Lasoski steered the #47 Casey's General Stores Maxim to the rim of Knoxville's semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval. While "The Dude" managed to catch Kinser in the corners, he was unable to keep pace with him on the straightaways. No more than a car-length separated the leaders between the 20th and 23rd laps. "The King of the Outlaws" had a four-car-length cushion when Lasoski's engine exploded on the back straightaway. Sammy Swindell, who passed Johnny Herrera for third place late in the first lap, took over the runner-up spot as "The Dude" stopped on the back stretch. He was heading out of turn four when Kinser took the checkered flag. Lasoski was credited with a 17th-place finish. "We just blew up," Lasoski said after the race. When asked about his physical condition, he said, "I'm still recovering. I don't feel like doing any jogging." Andy Hillenburg drove his #2 STP J&J past Jac Haudenschild during the ninth-lap restart and traded third with Herrera during the race's middle stages before settling for fourth place. Rounding out the top 10 in the "A" Feature were "The Wild Child," Dave Blaney, Jeff Shepard, 14th-starting Kenny Jacobs, Jeff Swindell and Smith. Jeff Swindell received his second Ecowater Fast-Time Award of the year for turning a 16.134-second (111.566-m.p.h.) qualifying lap. He finished eighth in the First Snap-on Tools Heat Race, but came back with a runner-up run in the "B" Feature and steered the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim into ninth place in the main event. Stevie, the runner-up in the 1993 Knoxville Nationals, was the 21st- fastest qualifier in the 45-car field. He raced past 11 sprinters from his 11th-row starting position to finish in 10th place.
