Mark Kinser Takes Knoxville Main Event By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (April 26) - Mark Kinser and the #5M Wirtgen Maxim just have a knack for performing well in Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series events at Knoxville Raceway. "This Maxim car seems to like Knoxville," the defending Amoco Knoxville Nationals champion said Saturday after winning his seventh "A" Feature in the last eight World of Outlaws events at "The Home of the Nationals." Kinser lowered the qualifying standard at the legendary semi- banked, 1/2-mile oval and finished second in the Preliminary Feature Friday. He came back Saturday and won the Vivarin Dash for the right to start the 25-lap main event on the pole. Sammy Swindell, winner of Friday's Preliminary Feature, took the early lead when Mark allowed the #5M to slide out of the low groove within seconds after flagman Doug Clark threw the green flag. Kinser passed Swindell for first place nine laps later, however, and led the final 16 for his fourth "A" Feature victory of the year. "This was one of those occasions where running second was to our advantage," Mark said. "Sammy showed me the line (low through turns one and two) and I just had to hold him off from there." As Mark and Sammy raced away from the rest of the field, former World of Outlaws champions Steve Kinser and Dave Blaney exchanged third place four times in the first four laps. Swindell entered lapped traffic during the fifth lap, but jumped the cushion three laps later, allowing Mark to catch him. Sammy kept his #1 Channellock Gambler in the lead as Mark tried to pass him deep in the fourth corner the next time around, but was unable to block his path through turn two early in lap 10. Mark opened an eight-car-length advantage within three laps as Steve Kinser challenged Swindell for the runner-up spot. First Heat Race winner Greg Hodnett and seven-time Knoxville Raceway champion Danny Lasoski relegated Blaney to sixth place on the back-straightaway midway through the 15th lap. The red flag was thrown the next time around as Larry Pinegar flipped in the second corner. "The King of the Outlaws" made a run at Swindell as the race resumed, but was unable to pull off the pass for second place. Jac Haudenschild drove the #22 Pennzoil Maxim around Blaney in the second corner to take over sixth place early in lap 17. Although qualifying woes still plague the Two Winners Racing team, Jeff Swindell passed 11 cars in the first 16 laps and pulled off the move of the race with eight laps remaining. As Stevie Smith took an inside line through the second corner to pass Blaney, Jeff threaded the #7TW Gold Eagle Maxim between the berm and Stevie to pass both for seventh place. Mark caught the backmarkers again with five laps remaining, and was almost a full straightaway ahead of his closest pursuers the next time around. He took the checkered flag with 12 car- lengths to spare after lapping 14 of the 24 cars in the field. "I have a very capable crew, so under the red flag I just get out of the car, get a drink of water and let them do their thing," Mark said. "We didn't change much under the red tonight. We had a little problem with the wing slider, but I guess I can't bellyache about that." Steve battled Sammy for the runner-up spot during the final four laps, but had to settle for third place. Completing the top 10 in the World of Outlaws' 11th "A" Feature of the year were Hodnett, "The Dude," Haudenschild, Jeff Swindell, Smith, Skip Jackson and Blaney. Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series Rookie of the Year candidate Paul McMahan was the 20th-fastest qualifier in the 45-car field, and was forced to start the main event outside the 11th row. He had the #83 Beef Packers Stealth on the move in the "A" Feature, however, passing 10 cars on his way to a 12th-place finish.
