Sammy Swindell Snaps Long Dry Spell at Knoxville By Richard Day KNOXVILLE, IA (April 25) - While Sammy Swindell has always raced well at Knoxville Raceway, he had been missing from victory lane at "The Home of the Nationals" for almost five years before winning Friday's Pennzoil World of Outlaw Series Preliminary Feature on Featherlite Trailers Night. "I want to dedicate this victory to Edie Crawford," the 1983 Nationals champion told the capacity crowd. "She was a good friend of mine who passed away recently. We're going to miss her, but I know she's watching and tonight she's proud." Swindell, the fourth-fastest qualified in the 48-car field earned the right to start the 20-lap feature inside the second row by following Greg Hodnett and Knoxville's single-lap record holder, Mark Kinser, across the finish line in the Vivarin Dash. Hodnett drove the #11H Selma Shell Gambler into the lead as the green flag fell in the Preliminary Feature. Steve Kinser passed Sammy for third place with a low move through turn two early in the opening lap. Swindell returned the favor two laps later, then passed Mark for the runner-up spot high in the fourth corner as the leaders entered lapped traffic five laps into the race. Two laps later, Sammy took the lead by winning a back- straightaway drag race with Hodnett. Seconds later, seven-time Knoxville Raceway champion Danny Lasoski steered the #1W Conn West Freight Maxim deep into the second corner to pass "The King of the Outlaws" for fourth place. Joey Saldana, son of 1970 Nationals champion Joe Saldana, brought out the caution flag early in the eighth lap when he spun to a stop in turn two. Joe Gaerte surrendered 15th place when his crew replaced his flat right rear tire during the caution period. Dave Blaney drove his #10 Vivarin J&J into fifth place, passing Steve Kinser during the ensuing restart. Flagman Doug Clark threw the caution flag again two laps later when Don Droud, Jr., spun in turn one. Mark, the defending World of Outlaws champion, threaded the #5M Wirtgen Maxim between Hodnett and the berm in turn three to take over second place as the green flag replaced the yellow. Blaney relegated Hodnett to fourth place the next time around. Swindell opened a four car-length advantage as Lasoski and Kinser challenged Hodnett for fourth with eight laps remaining. Mark was battling Sammy for the lead two laps later when "The Buckeye Bullet" pulled off a first-corner pass of Steve Kinser and Lasoski. Mark appeared to be in position to take the lead in dense lapped traffic with four laps remaining when Swindell executed a low move in the second corner to pass a pair of backmarkers. Sammy increased his lead to a full straightaway before taking the checkered flag as Mark raced through turn three. Swindell lapped 13 of the 24 cars in the field at least once. "The Channellock Gambler ran good on long runs tonight," Sammy said in victory lane. "We've been missing things a little - not setting quick times and so on - but the crew gave me a good car tonight. "I guess luck was on our side," Sammy added. "Our right rear tire is going flat now." Blaney and Steve Kinser finished third and fourth, respectively, to claim the last two automatic qualifying positions in Saturday's Vivarin Dash. Completing the top 10 in the feature were Hodnett, Lasoski, "B" Feature winner Stevie Smith, Jac Haudenschild, Jeff Swindell and Craig Dollansky. Mark received his fourth Channellock Fast-Time Award of the year after circling Knoxville's legendary semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval in 15.120 seconds. He record-setting run sliced .149 seconds off the one-lap standard he set during last year's Nationals. Andy Hillenburg rode an emotional roller-coaster throughout Featherlight Night at Knoxville Raceway. He allowed his #2 STP J&J to flip during his first qualifying lap, which caused him to start at the rear of the field in every race. Finishing fifth in the Third Heat Race, winning the "C" Feature and running seventh in the "B" would have kept him out of the Preliminary Feature had John Kearney, Leonard Lee and Lance Blevins not scratched.
